I sat down for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 premiere expecting to be hit right in the feels. I braced myself, warned my group chat, and even prepped my tear ducts.
And then, Monica Beltran died. That’s who they gave us. After teasing Richard Webber’s possible death?
After dangling Link’s life on the edge, ABC served up emotional breadcrumbs instead of the whole meal.
Beltran (played by Natalie Morales) passed after being crushed in last season’s explosion, while Webber and Link survived barely scratched.
Sure, Maggie Pierce is back next week to support a spiraling Amelia Shepherd, but even her return can’t patch this emotional pothole.
This premiere needed guts. Instead, it chose comfort. And if you’re a long-time fan like me, you probably felt the sting of that restraint too. So yes, I’m still annoyed. And no, I won’t pretend I’m over it.
How Monica Beltran Died in Grey’s Anatomy Season 22
Let’s start with what happened: Monica Beltran is gone from Grey’s Anatomy Season 22.
The trauma surgeon died after sustaining crushing injuries in the blast that ended Season 21.
It was painful, and Morales delivered her scenes beautifully, but the impact didn’t land. Not like it could’ve.
Beltran was brave, smart, and strong. But she was also relatively new. I seriously respected her, but I didn’t feel the loss the way I did with others.
Killing her off in the premiere felt like a narrative dodge. Grey’s Anatomy has always gone big with its deaths, remember Lexie? Derek? George? Those shook me. But this one just didn’t hit the same.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Should’ve Killed Richard Webber
I know, I know, it’s brutal. But I said what I said.
James Pickens Jr. is Grey Sloan. He’s the heart, the voice of reason, the father figure. But that’s exactly why his death would’ve mattered.
Webber’s exit could’ve redefined the entire direction of the season. Instead, they teased his possible demise, only for him to survive, looking tired but fine.
If emotional upheaval was the goal, this was the moment to go all in, but the writers hesitated. And it showed.
Link (Chris Carmack) was another close call, but again, they played it safe. He made it through with barely enough time to build tension. I felt it was a lot of smoke, no fire.
Maggie Pierce Returns to Grey’s Anatomy
That said, we’re getting Maggie on Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 2!
Kelly McCreary’s return as Maggie Pierce is teased in the episode 2 promo, and she’s back for an emotional support mission.
Amelia Shepherd (played by Caterina Scorsone) is struggling; she blames herself for the explosion, and Maggie’s back to help carry that weight.
I need that sister dynamic right now as much as Amelia does. I’ve always liked Maggie. Her presence brings warmth, and her dynamic with Meredith and Amelia is a series highlight.
But in this context? It just doesn’t pack the emotional punch it could’ve if Webber, Maggie’s biological father, had died.
Instead, we’re left with a grief arc built on a character we barely knew.
Grey’s Anatomy Missed A Real Storytelling Moment
Look, I’m not a sadist, I don’t want to lose characters I love. But Grey’s Anatomy used to challenge us. It made us cry, scream, and throw things. It forced characters to evolve through trauma.
That’s what made it iconic. This Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 premiere opener? It came and went like a breeze.
The show had the perfect moment to push its boundaries and shake up the Grey Sloan dynamic.
Instead, we got a tragedy-lite plot propped up by nostalgia. Emotional reunions are nice, but they’re no substitute for real emotional stakes.
I wanted to feel something real. And for a show that once ripped out our hearts on the regular, this premiere felt too careful, too calculated.
Beltran’s death might still ripple through the season —I’ll give them that —but it’s hard not to see this premiere as a missed opportunity.
Grey’s needed a seismic event. Something to shake us, haunt us, wake us up. And this? This was the dramatic equivalent of a shrug.
Should the show have gone bigger? Should Webber have died?
