George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones universe is expanding with A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, and we are getting our first look at the new spinoff to the popular HBO franchise. A teaser for the first trailer arrived today, with the full first look at the story of Dunk (Peter Claffey) and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) coming tomorrow as New York Comic Con gets underway.
The prequel series is set to be a different entity to both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, with the story not focusing on magic and flying beasts. The show will have a special panel at NYCC, which will be one of the first big promotional pushes for the series, which is arriving early in 2026. As well as the new trailer, there will be an expected mix of behind-the-scenes details and some more information about what exactly fans will see in this new installment of the franchise. For now, the synopsis we have for the show reads:
“A century before the events of “Game of Thrones,” two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms also stars Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Barotheon, Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen, Edward Ashley as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Henry Ashton as Daeron Targaryen, Youssef Kerkour as Steely Pate, Daniel Monks as Ser Manfred Dondarrion, Shaun Thomas as Raymun Fossoway, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Plummer, and Danny Webb as Ser Arlan of Pennytree.
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Will Be a Different ‘Game of Thrones’ Story
While the Game of Thrones franchise has previously been full of huge battles, dark magic, and the constant hunt for power, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms looks set to be something very different. That doesn’t just mean the story, but even the opening credits will be toned down compared to the bombastic orchestral arrangements of both Thrones and House of the Dragon. Explaining the need for the change, showrunner Ira Parker told Entertainment Weekly:
“All decisions came down to Dunk, trying to channel the type of person he is into every aspect of this show, even the title sequence. The title sequences on the original [Game of Thrones] and House of Dragon are big and epic and incredible. Ramin Djawadi’s score is orchestral and large and beautiful. That’s not really Dunk’s M.O. He’s plain and he’s simple and he’s to-the-point. He doesn’t have a lot of flash to him.”
How fans will react to a Game of Thrones show that does not have dragons and treachery at every turn is something that will be seen early next year. Considering the success of the franchise (ignoring that hugely divisive Thrones finale), it is unlikely that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be anything other than another HBO hit.
