The romantic relationship between Gil Grissom (William Peterson) and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) was a fan favorite on CSI.
Known as “Grissom Sara Relationship” or “GSR” by the fans, we resonated with them because the attraction was strong; they didn’t play on romantic tension.
CSI built a strong foundation of mutual respect and friendship between its leads, keeping the series focused on the cases.
There were times when fans grew frustrated as Grissom kept things strictly professional, but the relationship became more satisfying when the two started dating in the CSI Season 6 finale.
Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle Were the Definition of A Slow-Burn Relationship on CSI
I shipped Grissom and Sara’s relationship from the beginning of CSI — their story is still one of my favorites 25 years later.

I relished that we got to see the entirety of their relationship evolve, and it wasn’t rushed. It was apparent that Grissom was attracted to Sara, but he kept his feelings in check.
It was a classic slow-burn romance.
Every so often, we’d see a flicker of interest, like when he suggested he learned about beauty from meeting her.
During CSI Season 4, Grissom’s feelings for Sara intensified and became more noticeable. As they recreated a crime scene, he pinned Sara up against the wall and shared a sexually tense stare.
It changed their relationship, which scared Grissom, since he was a lone wolf. He cared for her deeply, but didn’t want to risk destroying what they had, which hurt Sara.
Even as they struggled to define their relationship, he was always there for her.
Grissom understood that Sara’s past often made her overreact to cases, such as when she drove drunk after discovering a rapist killed his victim, since they couldn’t match his DNA. All he could do was quietly comfort her.
While Grissom often retreated, Sara lashed out, a tendency that often got her into trouble with her colleagues. On CSI Season 5 Episode 13, appropriately titled “Nesting Dolls,” Sara lashed out during a domestic violence case, and Det. Ecklie wanted her fired.
Once Grissom learned about the domestic violence in Sara’s family history, he was sympathetic, stating he would watch out for Sara’s behavior in the future. It was the first time they had opened up to each other.
Grissom and Sara’s Relationship Played in the Background of CSI
Like many other procedurals, the cases took priority, and Grissom and Sara’s relationship played in the background.
We didn’t even think they were dating until Sara appeared in a robe at Grissom’s house.
The duo tried to keep their relationship a secret, but their coworkers guessed when Grissom brought Sara a veggie sandwich and didn’t bring one for them. Sometimes, little moments mean a lot.
Their relationship was a massive deal during the Miniature Killer storyline because Natalie Davis (Jessica Collins) realized how important Sara was to Grissom and knew to make her the final victim.
After the team rescued Sara, she saw Grissom’s name on his jacket and felt a sense of safety and comfort.
It always amused me when they explained their relationship to the board, as Sara thought they had been dating for two years, while Grissom stated they had been together since they met years ago.
Perspective was everything.
Fans Never Saw Grissom and Sara Happily Married Until CSI: Vegas
Since Jorja Fox and William Peterson left the show at different times during CSI Season 8 and CSI Season 9, fans had not seen them together on-screen for a considerable amount of time.
Sara left shortly after Grissom proposed, having become discouraged about a case. She returned briefly after Warrick’s death, and their reunion was bittersweet.
After almost losing Sara twice, first to the Miniature Killer and then when she left, Grissom gave up his career and followed her overseas to win her back in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9.
Their relationship wasn’t smooth sailing, though, because Sara eventually returned to the crime lab to help Catherine when they were short-staffed, and it proved more challenging to maintain a long-distance marriage than they had thought.
Thankfully, CSI reunited Grissom and Sara in the series finale, allowing them to sail off into the sunset.
CBS brought the popular couple back in the revival, CSI: Vegas, and allowed viewers to see them older and happily married as they faced health issues.
It was refreshing to see that they had grown together, and we were able to witness it.
One of the most pivotal scenes was when Sara lost her wedding ring, and Grissom returned it, placing it back on her finger, symbolizing their bond.
Since we never saw the wedding, this scene held great significance for the fans.
Their strong bond was a double-edged sword for CSI: Vegas.
Since fans loved Grissom and Sara so much and wanted to see more of them, many refused to watch when they learned the popular couple wouldn’t return.
That is loyalty.
