Wicked: For Good is one of the biggest movies of the year, immediately flagging it for a post-credits scene check. Just one year after the first film was released in theaters, becoming an unprecedented box office hit and Oscar contender, Jon M. Chu and his band of Ozians are back for the sequel. The film series is adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name, which is itself adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel… also of the same name. Wicked: For Good will adapt the second act of the stage musical.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ingenuity with post-credits scenes has changed the culture of movie-theater-going, making it a relevant question for every trip to the theater. Especially given Wicked’s immense popularity as a growing, multimedia franchise, audiences may want to know if Universal has plans for a future with more films to come. Or, at the very least, a post-credits scene could offer a fun epilogue moment that’s worth sticking around for.
‘Wicked: For Good’ Does Not Have a Post-Credits Scene
Simply put, Wicked: For Good doesn’t have a post-credits scene, keeping consistent with the 2024 film. Last year’s Wicked didn’t provide a post-credits scene to tease Glinda and Elphaba’s further story, following “Defying Gravity,” and now, the “For Good” song holds the final beat of the sequel. Wicked: For Good’s ending may leave audiences with curiosities about the future of Elphaba, Glinda, Fiyero, or the world of Oz, but the contents of the movie are all audiences have for now, at least in this iteration.
For those looking to dive deeper into the world and lore of Wicked, there are several novels written by Gregory Maguire that build upon his original book. The books are significantly darker than the film adaptations, meaning they aren’t intended for children, and they don’t break out into song. However, they still manage to contain the whimsy and sense of the fantastical that L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz and all subsequent adaptations have been known for.
Will There Be a ‘Wicked’ 3?
As of now, there are no plans to expand Wicked with future films, so For Good should be treated as the final act of the movie saga. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s tenure as Elphaba and Glinda will likely come to an end with this story. That said, it would be surprising if Universal Pictures passed up on the opportunity for more Wizard of Oz world adaptations following Wicked’s success. Importantly, author Gregory Maguire hasn’t sold the film rights to any of his Wicked novels beyond the first.
