A young couple is making out on the bed and about to have sex when the guy has to get a condom. Except, to his shock, he realizes shortly after that he can’t see for some reason.
He’s temporarily (presumably) gone blind.
Amy brings Gina her favorite beignets from the place they loved in New Orleans, and she admits she’s trying to get back into Gina’s good graces.
She also tells Gina about remembering Jake saying “I love you” and kissing him in the on-call room. Amy notices that Gina is looking at someone’s page online, and Gina says that she’s in the atonement phase of her guilt.
Meanwhile, Joan is getting checked out by the doctor. She’s still declining, and her doctor tells her that she’ll need regular transfusions and that she has two to three years. He asks if Joan has children who will be willing to help.
Joan says that her son isn’t answering her calls. Her doctor also tells her that she needs to slow down and has some reservations about her taking that gig because of how grueling it is.
Hannah, the new intern, starts her first day, looking shocked that Amy is also an intern. Meanwhile, Joan reprimands Jake for his behavior with Amy and basically shuts down Jake’s relationship with Amy.
Sonya updates her patient’s fiancé that he has a ten-year life expectancy after some work for him. And that he may need a liver transplant. She tries to encourage the fiancé to go through with a risky surgery that may also kill his fiancée.
Joan watches on as Sonya handles this case.
Jake has Amy and Hannah, and they’re treating Seth. Seth is with his mother, so he’s lying about what he was doing when he went blind. Amy also seems to take over some of Hannah’s teaching responsibilities.
The fiancé makes a decision in Sonya’s case, but she notes that the guy’s ex-husband is still his proxy, and he’s the one who will have to make the choices. It already sounds messy.
In a flashback to 2021, one of Amy’s colleagues comes in to introduce his daughter, Hannah, the current intern, to Amy.
When Hannah leaves, Amy confronts the father for his erratic behavior, having left a patient on the table and the premises, and he appears to be dealing with numerous personal issues.
Hannah mentions her father to Amy. She knows that Amy can’t remember. And Hannah tells Amy that her father died a few years ago.
Gina uses the number on a GoFundMe for the train guy’s family and calls, but she hangs up when someone answers the phone.
Grant, Matt (the patient)’s ex-husband, shows up to meet Nathan. And he makes the decision that Matt wants radiation instead of the surgery. They have already started arguing over who can make the decisions. The two end up airing each other’s dirty laundry while bickering over who can make the decision.
Joan makes a video call to Michael about the situation with Matt, Grant, and Nathan. And she jokes about him being on paternity leave, not understanding why he’d need it or what he could be doing. Michael has to go to the hospital for a few hours.
He tells Nora this, and she already seems conflicted.
Seth has a blood clot in his index finger while they do an MRI, and they speculate that he could have them in his eyes, so that’s what could be causing his blindness.
In the flashback, someone tells Amy that Dr. Ryan Clark (Hannah’s father) filed a formal complaint. Amy is resistant to speaking with him.
They figure out that Seth was taking Viagra, and Jake goes in to talk to him. Seth says that he had a porn addiction since he was a young guy, and so by the time he got older and it was time to perform with a girl, he couldn’t do it. He would take knock-off Viagra and other things.
The issues he has aren’t reversible. Amy updates Seth’s mother. She knows she could have warned him about everything else, but she wasn’t prepared for this—her and Amy bond over motherhood.
Seth may remain blind for the rest of his life, and Amy is looking for an alternative solution.
Amy reaches out to Gina for a psych consult. She overhears the train in the background, and Amy wants to head there to be with her, but Gina says that they’ll talk later.
In the flashback, Ryan confronts Amy because she wants to speak to him about calling HR on her. She’s trying to figure out what’s going on with Ryan because he’s not doing okay, and she recommends either taking a leave or reporting him.
Ryan becomes aggressive, yelling at her and breaking a photograph on her desk of her kids. He then asks if he resigns, if she won’t put any of this behavior in his file. She tells him that she was never going to do that, but he needs help.
Hannah and Amy find a solution that could help Seth and get his sight back.
Michael and Joan talk to Grant, the ex-husband to listen to his story and why he’s fit to make these decisiosn. Some of what Grant says about changing himself to be what Matt wanted him to be seems to hit with Michael.
He then speaks to Nathan. Nathan says that Matt wouldn’t want to not fully recover but if it comes down to it, he’d take any version of Matt in sickness and health.
In flashback, Ryan is at home with his family, including Hannah. He tells his family that COVID pandemic burned him out and he’s decided to resign. Ryan’s wife is livid about this even though Hannah says it’s fine and his son is cavalier.
The trio perform a procedure on Seth and find the clots. Amy starts having flashes of memory to what appears to be a Christmas, and it distracts her so much, she lets Hannah suck out the clots.
Michael talks to Joan and admits that after talking to Grant, he realized that he never changed his own proxy. Amy is still his because deep down he knows that Amy still knows him best.
This has influenced Michael’s decision and he’s honoring Grant’s choice. But now, Grant is saying that he may have been wrong. He thinks that maybe it’s him who wants more time because he can’t stand to thought of Matt leaving this world.
Grant and Nathan sit and wait for Matt’s surgery and talk.
Gina confrontns Amy because apparently, Amy spoke to Gina’s wife. They both have concerns because Gina donated over $11K to train victims. Gina is upset that Amy went behind her back. And Amy says that this is part of her making a new friend. They also that Gina needs a new therapist.
Gina’s wife doesn’t like Amy, but they both love Gina.
Amy is still having more flashes of a memory to Christmas, and it’s giving her a bad headache and making her feel bad. She heads into the office to talk to Michael, but her headaches and dizzines are still really bad because of the memory seizures.
She tells him about the Christmas flashes, and she confides in him that it feels like he rbrain is trying to warn he rabout something. Amy apologizes again and says that one of those days she’ll have to stop running to him.
Sonya updates Joan and Joan tells her that Jake’s tenure as chief resident is almost up and she’d be good for the role.
Jake talks to Seth. His sight is coming back, but he’ll be dealing with ED for a while. Jake tells him that real intimacy takes time and that the last woman he was with (Amy) he was in love with for a year before anything happened.
He gives Seth a pep talk. They talk about what it means to really be a man and deal with problems. Seth was worried because it was his first time trying to have sex, so he was upset he’ll be a virgin for the rest of his life.
Jake talks to Amy at the end of the shift. He tells her that Joan knows about the code and that he helped. And that as long as they’re not currently sleeping together, Jake’s job should be intact. And Jake says that Joan isn’t exactly wrong. He says that their situation hasn’t changed, and his feelings aside, this can’t happen again.
Hannah shows up to invite Amy to drinks since Sonya invited interns, and they took bets on whether or not she’ll show up. So Amy is going to help Hannah.
Michael sees Nathan with Matt, and it prompts him to chase after Jake and apologize for the other night and reaffirm that nothing happened. He knows that Jake is a good man. And he wanted to acknowledge that.Jake teelsl him that there’s nothing between him and Amy anymore.
Amy shows up at the bar for drinks, and she and Sonya have a moment where Sonya accuses Amy of saying something to Jake, and Amy admits that she told Jake about her having a thing for him, and that she’s not going anywhere.
They all have a toast at the table, swearing they’ll all be on the same side.
Amy has flashbacks again. She’s at an outdoor market one night around the holidays, and she sees Ryan with his family. They make eye contact, and it’s unsettling..
