It’s okay. Sometimes, instead of the Doc Season 2 Episode 3 review, where we get into all the fun bits and discuss the hour and what transpired, you may want the basics.

For an efficient play-by-play of what transpired during the hour, we have you covered there, too.

Here’s our scene-by-scene recap of “New Blood,” but don’t be shy, head over to our review as well and join the discussion in the comments! We love to chat.

Doc Season 2 Episode 3 Recap: New Blood
    (John Medland/FOX)

A woman catches a ride with a chatty driver. He’s enthusiastic and eagerly talks about how she’s a chef who is traveling. But she doesn’t appear to be feeling well. He inquires if she’s okay, and she says she is fine until she vomits blood on the divider. She asks that he take her to the hospital.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Amy is undergoing another test, and Amy tells Gina about the flashes she saw, as well as the fact that Joan had instructed Gina to leave Michael. Gina wonders why Amy didn’t tell her sooner, and Amy says she knows how Gina feels about Joan, but asks for context.

Gina says that Joan preferred the version of Amy that was passionate about medicine, and that’s it. Amy notes that Gina doesn’t trust Joan, and Gina agrees that she doesn’t, but she acknowledges that she does good things for Amy.

Amy says that Joan always championed her, and Gina notes that she didn’t feel that Amy needed that.

      by Jack Ori

Jake shows up at work and is still thinking about everything Amy said to him, including memories that come flooding back. He is still thinking about it when Sonya comes up and asks how he’s doing and if he’s ready for the day because of Joan.

Inside, he meets with Joan, and she gives him the privilege of choosing his own new intern while TJ is out, something that surprises him because neither Amy nor Miller had allowed that from their Chief Resident, and Joan says that she likes to empower people.

    (John Medland/FOX)

He bumps into Amy on his way out of the office, and they’re awkward but formal. Joan comments about Jake because, apparently, Amy told Joan about Jake last year (which is interesting since she never told Gina).

Joan asks if Amy is getting any more memories, and Amy deflects, something that Joan notices, before cracking a joke about Joan not getting too comfortable in that position since she wants her office back. Joan likes that Amy’s ambition is still intact.

Amy checks on the patient, the woman who got sick in the cab. She has Hep B and stopped taking her normal medicine because of the side effects, but has been treating it with herbs and stem cells that she’s getting in Mexico.

Amy consults with Gina because the patient’s scans actually look good, and they, along with the others at the nurse’s station, discuss the rise of medical tourism.

Agnes takes TJ to PT, and they see another patient, a veteran who lost his leg in combat, lashing out. Agnes wants TJ to help the guy if he can.

Amy talks to the doctor running the stem cell trial in Mexico, and he says that if Claire isn’t back that day to receive her next dosage, she will be kicked out of the study that’s helping her.

As a result, Amy calls Michael, hoping that he’ll be able to arrange for the hospital to charter a flight to bring Claire back for her treatment, but he’s at home. He tells her that Joan is in charge right now and patches her in; then, when they both hear about Amy’s request, Joan shuts it down.

    (John Medland/FOX)

The hospital cannot afford the liability or the expense, especially after the UNOS thing. When the call ends, Joan seems peeved that Amy went above her instead of directly to her. And she tells Amy to get Claire to make peace with things.

Sonya overheard the whole thing and made a snarky comment about it, which prompted another memory from Amy. She recalls overhearing Sonya on the phone with someone talking about making a move on Jake. Awkward and hilarious!

TJ enters the room to speak with the veteran who has a prosthesis and is having a hard time. But he lashes out at TJ, calling him out for having a hero complex and wanting to “fix him.” He mentions that his prosthetic sucks, and he can’t seem to get the doctor in to help him.

However, there’s something wrong with his leg, which TJ notices when the man tries to put the prosthetic back on. Suddenly, arterial blood shoots out, and TJ goes into action with assistance from a nurse.

Claire wants to leave without treatment because she wants to attend the trial in Mexico. Gina found new treatments stateside, but they won’t be available for a year. And Claire doesn’t want to do that. Gina threatens to put her on a psych hold if she leaves.

Claire calls them both out for being paternalistic and wrong because her degenerative disease isn’t killing her right this second, so she gets the “wait and see” aspect.

    (John Medland/FOX)

TJ asks Sonya to consult with Kevin, the veteran. But they’re both trying to gauge their impressions of Joan and what they think about her.

Kevin has an infection that ruptured, and they have to take more of Kevin’s leg to fix him. He’s upset about this.

Jake is still doing interviews with prospective interns, and it’s not going well. The one guy clearly had a beef with Amy, and the next one is arrogant, feeling like the hospital owes him something. Jake takes a break and bumps into Jake, who is taking Naproxen.

He asks her about that, and she talks about her memories coming back. He notices the look she gives Sonya and asks her about it, and she tells him that Sonya never liked her and apparently had a thing for him because she can remember hearing Sonya talk about it on the phone.

Jake says he wishes she hadn’t told him that, even though, as the chief Resident, he would know, considering Sonya is a third-year. They’re in the middle of talking when she has another memory of Jake telling her that he loved her in the parking garage.

She tells him about it, and he’s surprised that her memories really are coming back to her, as that was the day of the accident. She walks away, leaving him reeling from that.

Katie shows up at Michael and Nora’s place, bringing food because she wants to cook for them. She wants Michael to read her senior report. Katie lets it slip that Amy is back to TMS treatments and that she has had memories come back.

    (John Medland/FOX)

    Michael seems surprised by this.

Amy goes to check on Claire, but someone is there. Claire had her stem cells couriered into the hospital, and her friend, a nurse practitioner, is there to inject them. Amy tries to talk her out of it, but then, because of its danger, Amy decides to just do it.

Jake interviews a young woman whose father was the head of a department in the hospital, and she’s not the arrogant type from a fancy school. Jake likes her and wants her to meet Joan. She may be the new intern.

Sonya has to stop the surgery because Kevin’s stats aren’t great. TJ tries to get more information on who did the original amputation, but when he reaches out to the military hospital, they don’t have Kevin on record.

Amy talks to Claire. Claire apologizes for putting her in a bad position, but Amy says she understands. She tries to deflect from things when she’s talking to Joan, but she gets a nosebleed.

    (John Medland/FOX)

TJ learns that Kevin wasn’t in Afghanistan when he got his amputation. He was stationed elsewhere, presumably for a classified mission in Georgia, and they would’ve used a different metal, cobalt, which is causing his infection and other issues.

Joan confronts Gina about Amy’s TMS treatments. She mentions the nosebleeds and pushes, even though Gina doesn’t want to talk about her patient. Joan mentions that Amy has been taking Naproxen and that the treatment could cause too many issues for Amy that aren’t desirable in a doctor.

Gina gets frustrated and reminds Joan that it’s not her decision to make and that Joan always thinks she knows best.

Sonya tells Kevin that his knee is still intact and that the issue was a hip replacement, not the knee, due to the cobalt.

TJ and Kevin have a nice talk where TJ acknowledges that maybe he does have a hero complex. And Kevin feels like a fraud because he only wore the uniform for six weeks before he mishandled a grenade.

Nora is frustrated because she feels like Michael acted differently when he heard about Amy. And she talks about her insecurities again regarding Amy and what it means if she regains her memories. She feels that Michael is scared that if Amy remembers why she left him, she won’t pine after him anymore, and that affects her.

Michael has to reassure her again.

Claire is having issues and is unstable. Amy brings Jake in for help, and Amy confesses that she injected Claire with non-FDA-approved stem cells from Mexico. Claire starts coding, and Jake is livid! They get her back.

Katie and Michael talk. She overheard their argument, they looked at old pictures of Danny, and Katie asked if part of him still loves Amy. He admits that part of him always will.

Claire thanks Amy. Jake pulls Amy out to have a word, but he’s still visibly pissed off. He points out that part of the issue is that she puts him in positions that he knows he won’t refuse because of her. They start making out, and he pulls away, saying he asked her to stop, but she’s not sorry about it.

TJ is leaving, and he has a talk with Sonya. But it also seems like Agnes likes TJ.

In her office, Joan opens up some lab results. We flah bac to her crying and telling Amy that she may have leukemia. And Amy tells her that if it gets bad, Joan won’t be able to perform surgeries. Joan gets pissed about Amy telling her that and says that she would never jeopardize a patient.

    (John Medland/FOX)

Amy and Gina enter Joan’s office, and Joan discusses Claire. Joan figures things out with Amy and wants to lay down the law. She tells Amy that she’s been given too wide a berth there because her ex is the CMO, her best friend is her neurologist, and her boyfriend is the chief Resident.

Joan has been reviewing Amy’s cases, and she has expressed concern about Amy’s behavior. Amy is put out that AJoan has been reviewing her, but Joan points out that Amy took advantage of her friendship with Joan today, and Joan reminds her that she’s still auditioning for her spot there — no favors.

After Joan is gone, Gina and Amy talk. Gina is upset that she’s hearing about all of this from Joan. She wants to rethink their treatment plan, and Amy doesn’t want to give up her treatment plan. Gina wants to do things her way, slower and steadier. Amy reluctantly agrees.

Michael texts Amy about Katie’s project. He wants to text her about her memories, too. But he erases the message.

    (John Medland/FOX)

Sonya catches up with Jake at the meeting that Joan called, and she’s excited to tell him about some tickets she has to a sports game, and she wants to hang out with him.

But he glances at Amy, likely thinking about what she said, and tells Sonya that he has Mia. OUCH.

Joan announces that in two months, she’ll hold a performance review for everyone, and people will be let go if they don’t rise to the occasion.
