Patrick Brice, the director of the 2015 found footage horror movie Creep, and the sequel and TV show that stemmed from it, teases the production of Creep 3. Although he and co-creator and star Mark Duplass, are busy with the development of the TV series The Creep Tapes, they haven’t abandoned the idea of continuing the movie series. Could Peachfuzz return in the feature film format in the near future? It seems very likely.
The director appeared on the Slasher Radio podcast to chat about Season 2 of The Creep Tapes, premiering today on Shudder. Brice and Duplass have mentioned wanting to see Duplass’ Peachfuzz in another movie sequel, but so far, all fans have gotten to see is the TV show. When asked what the Shudder series means for the future of the film franchise, Brice says:
“It is something we talk about all the time, and it is something that we are working on. It’s part of the mix. The show is almost an incubator for what Creep 3 could be, in a lot of ways. I won’t say which episodes, but some of the episodes for the show were potential Creep 3 ideas that we’d had at one point or another.
“I just want Creep 3 to be a defining statement of some kind with the series. I want it to justify its own existence in terms of being a movie. If we’re going to make it, we’re going to do it right and do right by the franchise that we’ve already created, but we also have to do something that explodes things a little bit and is surprising.”
The 2015 original film was a huge hit within the horror community, presenting a different kind of villain and a great spin on the found footage tropes. The 2017 sequel took things even further, with a higher production value that translated into critical acclaim. It is a rare example of a found footage horror movie getting a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Brice’s Reference for ‘Creep 3’ Is a Cult Zombie Favorite
Creep 2 certainly left things open for a third movie, as the film’s lead escapes and attacks Aaron, but he’s never shown to be defeated. The Creep Tapes runs in a different timeline, and presents the iconic killer trying to find helpless victims in shorter running times. Creep 3 would certainly have to present a twist to the formula, but Brice seems to have it already. For reference, the director thinks of Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness, the third Evil Dead movie that drastically changed the setting from a “cabin in the woods” movie to medieval horror:
“I’m thinking about the precedent of things like this. I’m a huge fan of Army of Darkness, and I always think of Army of Darkness as an example of a third movie in a horror genre as something that challenged itself.
“It took these elements from an established franchise, and ran with it and took it in another unexpected, super fun direction. Sam Raimi was able to explore almost a different genre through that movie and something that he was excited about.”
Creep 3 sounds like it could be made in the near future, and Brice and Duplass certainly seem to be on the right track for expanding the franchise even further. However, the director also says that the goal is to stay in the TV realm with The Creep Tapes:
“The way that we shoot The Creep Tapes and the way that it exists in our lives as a working model, I think we’re really happy right now, and we’re probably going to try to do this as long as we can. And that’s not to say we couldn’t make a third movie while we’re doing the show, but right now, we’re beholden to making this show the best version that it can be.”
