Director Gareth Evans, the filmmaker behind not one, but two of the greatest action movies ever made in The Raid and The Raid 2, has now quietly wrapped on his reimagining of a Japanese crime thriller classic. If that was not already exciting enough, the stacked cast for the remake has now been revealed. And it will have you seeing stars.
Evans, who most recently hurled Academy Award-nominee and Venom star Tom Hardy into the action movie fray with Netflix’s long-awaited Havoc, has helmed a reimagining of director Takashi Nomura’s 1967 yakuza thriller A Colt Is My Passport, which follows a hit man who is hired by a gang lord to kill a rival boss. The cast announcement, which comes courtesy of Deadline, reveals that Evans will reunite with Gangs of London star Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, who will take the lead as the assassin on the run.
The rest of the stellar cast includes Oscar nominee Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), Victor Alli, (Bridgerton) Ewan Mitchell (The Last Kingdom), Burn Gorman (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and Noah Taylor (Edge Of Tomorrow). Amazon MGM Studios is behind the reimagining of A Colt is My Passport and you can check out the synopsis below…
The update of Takashi Nomura’s hardboiled noir will be set in 1978 Detroit and tell the story of Colt, a Vietnam veteran turned contract killer, who goes on the run after assassinating a gangland boss.
‘A Colt Is My Passport’ Will Merge “Film Noir and Spaghetti Western Tropes”
Anyone who has seen Dìrísù in action as undercover cop Elliot Carter in Gangs of London will know that he is more than qualified to lead an action thriller outing, and it’s exciting that the actor has now won a big screen lead. Alongside Dìrísù, Evans will also reunite with writer Chris Webb, who worked as part of the stunt team on both Havoc and the folk horror flick Apostle. Evans, meanwhile, has teased his upcoming remake of A Colt is My Passport, saying in a statement that he quickly “fell in love” with the 1960s original and its “bold fusion of genres.”
“From the moment I first saw Takashi Nomura’s wildly influential A Colt Is My Passport, I fell in love with its bold fusion of genres. Merging film noir and spaghetti western tropes together in an irresistible way I knew immediately I wanted to take on the challenge of making this my next feature. More a reimagining than a remake, Chris Webb’s remarkable, noir-drenched script has taken the original film’s core themes and built upon them gifting the story’s iconic characters more emotional weight while retaining its deep rooted genre influences.
The incredible cast led by Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Jack Reynor, Lucy Boynton, Victor Alli, Burn Gorman and Tim Roth have been an absolute dream to work with. Their dedication towards realising the vision of the film has been nothing short of inspiring, making the last 12 weeks of production a deeply rewarding and reinvigorating experience. I am beyond grateful for the trust and faith Orion have shown in us and I am so excited to share this wildly ambitious film with audiences worldwide.”
