Dexter fans just got a killer update! As the future of the franchise remains uncertain, Michael C. Hall confirmed that Dexter: Resurrection has officially been renewed for Season 2. In a video shared to YouTube on Wednesday, October 8, Hall, 54, thanked viewers for “tuning in” and showing their support as he assured them that there is more to come.
“The writers room is assembling now,” he continued. “Details will be forthcoming, but I wanted to be the first to let you know that the story continues.”
Resurrection is the third spinoff in the franchise and serves as a direct continuation of Dexter: New Blood — but with a twist. While the beloved antihero famously died at the end of the show after being shot by his own son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), Resurrection decided to figuratively say, “scratch that, reverse it,” and had him awaken from a 10-week coma instead.
Realizing the weight of what he put his son through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right. But when Miami Metro’s Angel Batista arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness, they soon find themselves deeper than ever imagined.
Earning a 95% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Resurrection was praised for fully embracing the absurdity of the retcon and still crafting a thrilling narrative that felt true to the universe.
It also boasted a star-studded main cast that helped breathe new life into the show, including Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction), Dominic Fumusa (Nurse Jackie), Emilia Suárez (Up Here), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (The Lincoln Lawyer), and Kadia Saraf (Law & Order: SVU). Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), David Dalmachian (Oppenheimer), and Krysten Ritter (Marvel’s Jessica Jones) had guest-starring roles.
The Booming ‘Dexter’ Universe Continues to Shrink
Not every installment in the Dexter universe has been as lucky. Earlier this year, Dexter: Original Sin creator Clyde Phillips slammed Paramount for making the sudden decision to cancel the prequel series after it had previously been greenlit for a second season back in April.
“It was a tough phone call I got that night where they had already picked up the show. I had informed all the writers and actors, and then they unpicked it up. All while picking up Resurrection, which was no surprise,” he told the Dissecting Dexter podcast in September. “It wasn’t handled well, and I’m not happy about it.”
He also mentioned that the highly-anticipated spinoff that would follow the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) had been put on hold, despite the fact that 10 episodes had already been written.
I honestly don’t think they’re going to go for it. I just think they’re interested in Resurrection. I mean, if they cancel Original Sin, which is a built-in hit, how are they going to pick up Trinity? If they do, I’d be delighted, but I don’t see them doing it.
