First announced in 2023, The Brave and the Bold will introduce the DCU version of Batman. However, it’s been a rather slow development cycle, with some fans speculating that the film’s director has moved on from the project. Not only is the filmmaker behind The Flash still attached to helm the Batman reboot, it seems DC Studios might be planning to make a big announcement in a few months.
While promoting his new HBO series, It: Welcome to Derry, Andy Muschietti told Variety that he can’t talk about his upcoming Batman DCU film, incidentally revealing a timeline. “We have to wait a few, a couple of months to start talking about it,” Muschietti confirmed, before admitting that already said too much with that statement. “I screwed it already.” Despite a delayed development timeline, it seems Muschietti is still attached to helm The Brave and the Bold, although the project could be different to what was announced by DC Studios a few years ago.
James Gunn has been open about working on The Brave and the Bold script with an unnamed writer, as he considers Batman a major priority for the DC Universe. For him, not having a Dark Knight set in stone yet is his “biggest issue” thus far, and while he is not writing the screenplay himself, Gunn has worked closely to ensure it is up to quality. Due to the amount of time that has been spent on the project, it can be presumed that some things might have changed, especially since Gunn said The Brave and the Bold is the film’s title “right now.”
“No, I don’t — Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally. And it’s not — I’m not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he’s incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I’m doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.”
James Gunn Rips Fans Complaining About Having Two Different Batman
For many, one of the biggest hurdles for the upcoming DCU Batman film is the introduction of yet another Caped Crusader alongside Robert Pattinson, whose version has become an all-time favorite interpretation of the classic superhero in fan circles. However, James Gunn doesn’t think it is going to be a big deal, as he believes it is the diehard fans that “don’t understand” having two different Batman on screen, not the “casuals.” He used Peacemaker Season 2 as an example, a show that switched universes while still retaining the main characters.
“Yeah, but sometimes. But is it causing anybody grief in any way? I think it was the same thing. I think that people are really starting to learn about stuff like that. One of the weirdest things for me is that big fans are often like, ‘Well, listen, I understand this, but normies will never understand this. Casuals will never understand this.’ But the truth is, guys, that you’re the ones that don’t understand.
“The casuals always understand. You can say, ‘Oh, yeah, he’s changed Peacemaker, there was some Justice League [characters that] were in that. Now it’s Justice Gang.’ And regular people who just like TV shows are like, ‘Oh, okay. That’s weird.” And then they’re done. But the people who really focus on this stuff, they’re in our bubble. And the people in our bubble think that everyone outside of that bubble is too stupid to understand nuance. And it is just totally not the case.”
It is too early to tell if Gunn will be right about Batman, but if The Brave and the Bold ever releases in theaters, audiences will judge for themselves, and likely with their wallets.
