At some point, Kevin Atwater is starting to become the sideline king!
Chicago PD has always had an issue with sidelining the character in favor of others. He, in particular, gets the short end of the stick when it comes to the centric installments, more often than not because of how far and few between his tend to be.
But fret not, as Chicago PD Season 13 Episode 5 will deliver our first Atwater-centered hour of the season, and it promises intrigue and action.

Are You Ready for an Explosive Hour? Miami Promises to Be the Bomb (Sorry, Not Sorry)
The episode, titled “Miami,” will have Atwater reuniting with an old friend from the Academy, and it’s already interesting that we’ll get a fresh face and some new blood with a tie to him.
We’ve been wondering where Kevin has been and why his presence has felt lacking, but the promo shows him in his uniform, suggesting he still does some street work, too.
And he certainly will with this upcoming case, which involves bombings that are taking place all across downtown Chicago.
In the promo, we see a bomb go off and even catch a glimpse of Atwater shielding Burgess as it detonates, which, frankly, warms the cockles of this girl’s heart.

Their partnership and friendship have been one of the most significant aspects of Chicago PD for 13 years, and the family feels that the bond between the two is strong.
But it’s evident that this isn’t a one-and-done bombing and that whoever the perpetrator is, they’re setting off bombs at targeted places all around the city.
It’s up to Atwater and the Intelligence unit to figure out who’s doing it, why, and how to stop it before more people get hurt.
After all, no one wants to see a city under siege in this horrific way! It brings about a terrorist component that will put any big city on edge.
Atwater Reunites with the Mysterious Fox, an Old Friend from Police Academy

Interestingly, the case will have Atwater reuniting with an old Academy buddy, and given that love interests are always at the forefront of conversations regarding Atwater, one has to wonder if that will be the case with Fox.
We don’t know much about her beyond the fact that she attended the Academy with Atwater, but the stills make it clear she’ll have an active role in the case and work closely with Intelligence. Fox is featured in the bullpen a few times, so she’s locked in for this case.
The two of them are boots on the ground when the first explosion occurs, and it’s an intense affair that plays out like something out of a disaster film. So, Miami is a big, explosive episode, the type that will have adrenaline pumping the whole way through.
It’s an exciting prospect for Atwater, whose stories are always great but can sometimes veer away from the more action-packed angle. We can’t say that this time!
Is Devlin Connected to the Photograph Mystery?

We likely won’t get much follow-up on the Voight situation and who is behind sending him a photo of himself as a child. But it’s worth noting that Commander Devlin will appear in this upcoming episode.
One of the working theories is that he’s the one who sent Voight that photo, because he’s still angry that Voight blackmailed and threatened him to get Intelligence back. Maybe we’ll get something else to fuel or dispel that theory as Devlin handles one of the city’s biggest crises since he took over.r
Despite his issues with Voight, he’d undoubtedly want one of the best units in the force on this case, so hopefully, he’ll be able to set a lot of that aside. And the photos we do see of Devlin suggest that he speaks more with Atwater than with anyone else.
The cases will also have Trudy on the ground, which is a relief because this season is putting her to use more and giving her more screentime. It’s something we’ve been begging for every season.
Also, Trudy has always had a soft spot for Kevin, so it’s nice to know she’ll have some prevalence during one of his significant episodes.
It’s ALMOST All Hands on Deck for Kevin’s Big Episode

The stills also show that Imani and Ruzek will be active in the hour, though it appears Kim will be the most prominent alongside Kevin.
It may mean that Torres is taking an absence during this installment, but we’ll have to see.
Whether the entire unit is in this installment or not, I, for one, am THRILLED about an Atwater-centric, and this one feels like something different for the character.
The episode also seems like one of those adrenaline-inducing types that will feel more like an action movie than a standard episode of Chicago PD, and that’s right up my alley.
Also, I’m curious to meet Fox and see what the hour will do with her. Are they introducing her as a one-off character, or will she become something more? We’ll have to see.
