Britney Spears used cocaine during a period when she was also breastfeeding their sons, her ex-husband Kevin Federline is alleging in a new memoir. Spears responded in a lengthy X post, calling Federline’s behavior “gaslighting” and writing that his book is full of “little white lies.”
Federline’s memoir is salaciously titled You Thought You Knew, and excerpts have appeared in a number of outlets ahead of the October 21st release. A section shared with US Weekly is set in 2006, when Preston was 13 months old, Jayden was one month old, and both were breastfeeding. Federline claims he was alerted to the drug abuse by his concerned father-in-law, Jamie Spears, at the release party for Federline’s debut album, Playing with Fire.
“I was happy [Jamie Spears] had decided to come support me,” Federline writes. “He threw a look my way, shook his head, and motioned to my dressing room door. His expression sat in that flat blank space between disapproval and apprehension, as if to say: ‘She’s here, and it’s not good.’”

According to Federline, he walked in on Spears and an anonymous actress — one that Federline hints is pretty famous now, saying she “was about to blow up from a role that would transform her life.”
“The first thing I saw was Britney and her young starlet friend snorting a fat line of coke off the table,” Federline claims. “Both were wearing these outrageous wigs. Britney’s was electric blue. It was surreal. They didn’t even try to hide it.”
In the memoir he claims that he confronted Spears, saying, “Please don’t go home and breastfeed the kids like this. Call your mom or someone. We need to get formula. You can’t do this.”
Federline alleges that Spears then threw a cocktail in his face in front of guests, before storming out of his album release party.“That was the proverbial final straw, the breastfeeding thing. Her reaction,” he writes. “That’s what ended us.”
According to the NIH, cocaine stays in breastmilk for 36 hours after use. It’s unclear from Federline’s excerpt if Spears waited. Whether he’s holding back for the book, telling the best story he can just short of libel, and/or just not a very good writer, it’s too soon to say.
On October 15th Spears released a statement that didn’t directly address Federline’s claims, but instead accused him of creating a rift between the star and her children, Sean and Jayden.
The constant gaslighting from ex-husband is extremely hurtful and exhausting. I have always pleaded and screamed to have a life with my boys.
Relationships with teenage boys is complex. I have felt demoralized by this situation and have always asked and almost begged for them to be a part of my life.
Sadly, they have always witnessed the lack of respect shown by own father for me. They need to take responsibility for themselves. With one son only seeing me for 45 min in the past 5 years and the other with only 4 visits in the past 5 years. I have pride too. From now on I will let them know when I am available. Trust me, those white lies in that book, they are going straight to the bank and I am the only one who genuinely gets hurt here. I will always love them and if you really know me, you won’t pay attention to the tabloids of my mental health and drinking. I am actually a pretty intelligent woman who has been trying to live a sacred and private life the past 5 years. I speak on this because I have had enough and any real woman would do the same.
Federline and Spears finalized their divorce in 2007, and Spears lived under the legal conservatorship of her father Jamie from 2008 to 2021. She has long characterized Jamie’s role in her life as abusive. In her own 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears admits to abusing Adderall.
