Marvel Studios’ attempts to bring Blade into the MCU have become the stuff of legend, but for all the wrong reasons. Having originally been announced at SDCC in 2019, the movie starring Mahershala Ali as the Daywalker vampire hunter Blade has been through several writers and directors without any real movement forward. However, it seems that despite the film’s status in limbo, actress Mia Goth is still down to play in the Marvel sandbox when the movie finally gets in gear.

While speaking to Elle ahead of the release of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Goth was asked about her potential involvement in Blade, and is still very much on board with appearing in the movie whenever it happens. After briefly confirming that she is still attached to the movie – reportedly in the villain role of Lilith – she added, “It’s for the best that it’s taken the time that it has. They want to do it right.”

This is something that Kevin Feige has also reiterated when questioned several times about what exactly is happening with Blade. In July, Feige told press:

“We didn’t want to put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. You can start and have a good script and make it a great script through production, but we didn’t feel confident we could do that on Blade. We didn’t want to do that to Mahershala [Ali] and didn’t want to do that to us.”

Although Blade has appeared in the MCU in two forms now, with Wesley Snipes reprising his role for Deadpool & Wolverine and an animated version being seen in Marvel Zombies, his only appearance in his new form has been via a voice over from Ali in the post-credits scene of Eternals.

Since that original tease in 2021’s highly divisive movie, there have reportedly been four different treatments of Blade’s potential live-action MCU debut that have not been up to scratch. Among them was one period piece, reportedly set in the 1930s, which was so similar to Warner Bros. hit Sinners that Ryan Coogler’s movie actually used costumes that were originally intended for the Marvel film.

The last updates on Blade have not exactly been positive. There is currently no slot reserved for the movie, and with all focus being on the upcoming Avengers movies, the coming of the X-Men, and the ending of the Multiverse Saga, it is hard to work out exactly where Blade could fit into the current Marvel world.

Naturally, there is always a higher level plan with Kevin Feige’s MCU, and although it seems that Blade’s place in the Marvel franchise could be slipping away, we have already seen the Marvel Spotlight banner deliver Werewolf by Night to great success. Sometimes, a film that doesn’t have a place in the main timeline can be a refreshing thing, and Blade could be one of those movies. With rumors of a Midnight Suns collaborative project being an end goal for the supernatural side of the MCU, it is unlikely that Blade will be abandoned…fans just need to be very, very patient.
