Over the course of the last 38 years, Shane Black has written and/or directed some of the smartest, funniest crime movies to come out of the major studios, from the highly influential “Lethal Weapon” to cult favorites like “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and “The Nice Guys.” All of these films have been heavily influenced by 20th century pulp fiction writers, but for his latest movie, Black goes directly to the source, adapting one of the genre’s key figures for an action-comedy as offbeat, idiosyncratic, and entertaining as any Black has made. “Play Dirty” isn’t a direct adaptation of any one…
Gen V confirmed several characters from The Boys would cross over into Season 2 of the spinoff series, including Starlight (Erin Moriarty) and The Deep (Chace Crawford). Other characters were quietly confirmed, though not officially announced. One of them demonstrates not only how well Gen V and The Boys tie together within the same universe and timeline but also who might be pulling the strings behind the scenes. Spoiler alert: It’s not Dean Cipher (Hamish Linklater). In Season 2, Episode 5, “The Kids Are Now All Right,” Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) makes her way to the Prime Video spinoff series.…
Spoilers below for anyone who hasn’t yet caught up with Tulsa King’s latest Season 3 episode, “The Fifty,” via Paramount+ subscription, so be warned!Tulsa King’s third season is already a blast, with not just one but two high-ranking threats clouding up any future endeavors he’s planning for the 2025 TV schedule . There’s James Russo’s mob boss Quiet Ray Renzetti, who didn’t take kindly to Dwight’s solo venturing, and there’s Robert Patrick’s Jeremiah Dunmire, who doesn’t seem like he’ll be taking kindly to anything Dwight’s crew gets invested in. Case in point: Episode 302 had me stressing the hell out…
If Ebertfest Comes to an End, It’s a Huge Loss for Film Fans Who Aren’t Chasing That Awards Calendar
In April 2009, when I was just a freshman in college, I drove four hours across state lines to attend the Ebertfest Film Festival in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, then in its eleventh year. I didn’t go for a starry premiere of the latest awards contender or to gawk at celebrities on the red carpet, but because a fellow journalist — then Roger Ebert‘s print editor at the Chicago Sun Times — was gracious enough to invite an aspiring film writer to meet other people and spend the weekend with a film-loving community. Though I’ve never been able to return since, Ebertfest…
As Alan Ritchson continues to expand his action filmography, he is switching it up alongside a comedy star in an explosive new film from Amazon MGM Studios. With several projects on the way from major studios, Ritchson has been increasing his output after breaking records on the Prime Video thriller series. This time, fans of the actor will get to see him as an action hero once again, but in a very unconventional role. Entertainment Weekly has debuted several images from Playdate, an upcoming action comedy that is set to premiere on Prime Video on November 12. The film stars…

Director James Cameron‘s third entry in the “Avatar” series, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” opens this December, but audiences jonesing for a big-screen trip to Pandora can whet their appetites this week with the theatrical re-release of “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Released in 2022, 13 years after the original “Avatar,” “The Way of Water” proved to be worth the wait, a sequel (like Cameron’s earlier “Aliens” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”) that built on the earlier film‘s innovations and dug deeper into its themes. Because of the sequel’s new ambitions and utilization of up-to-the-minute technology, Cameron found himself in the…
Chris Stuckmann’s terrifying horror debut Shelby Oaks promises to be one of 2025’s notable releases in the genre, and fans of modern horror are already lining up for it. His first feature film releases in theaters on October 24, courtesy of Neon and their support for the content creator turned filmmaker. Judging from the final trailer, Shelby Oaks will go heavy on the scares, the result of Stuckmann’s strong passion for horror. But as any film critic making the bold jump into filmmaking would know, he understands that his film will come under scrutiny. So far, the opinions are positive,…
I’ve enjoyed many shows released amid the 2025 TV schedule and, as the year winds down, I have a new favorite. HBO recently debuted Task, a miniseries that sees Mark Ruffalo playing the head of a task force investigating a string of robberies at drug dens in the Philadelphia area. The show is created by writer/producer Brad Ingelsby and, thus far, I’ve been captivated by it. I’d already love to see a second season, but hear me out on a crossover I want even more. A Halloween-themed installment of the flagging “V/H/S” franchise is obvious to the point of redundancy: Both have become annual celebrations of horror-related kitsch, “scary” as a means of self-classification but increasingly safe — even comforting — in execution. Likewise, both offer a selection of disposable treats wrapped in the promise of a night to remember, but only one of them has ever given me a good excuse to dress my three-year-old son as the wood-chipper from “Fargo” (my then-pregnant wife went as Marge Gunderson, it was a whole thing). The “V/H/S” omnibuses became an institution because the first two were sinister enough…
