While Ghosts might be perfectly timed for spooky season, fans are more excited than fearful about the upcoming fifth season of this iconic CBS sitcom.
Based on the BBC series by the same name, Ghosts follows a group of ghosts haunting a couple living in an inherited country estate.
Asher Grodman portrays Trevor, the ghost of a Wall Street stockbroker with a confident streak and a secret, softer side revealed throughout the show.
Trevor has quickly become a fan favorite, with Grodman even earning a Critics’ Choice award nomination for this role.
In this exclusive interview, Grodman reflected on his journey portraying this beloved character across several seasons and what he’s excited for fans to see happen on the upcoming season of Ghosts.
Grodman looked to the media from the ’90s to help build his understanding of Trevor, but relied heavily on the show to learn about the character over the course of the sitcom.
Although Trevor may have learned a few lessons along the way and shown his emotional side, he always returns to his usual cocky self.
Reflecting on what he learned while working on the show, Grodman said, “Learning how to find a spontaneity and improvisational feel is really the core of what makes all this believable.”
He also expressed wanting to play Trevor as grounded as possible while still playing to the comedy.
Even beyond the math and rhythm that come with learning the ins and outs of being in a sitcom, Grodman realized that “The point of view is that it’s funny as long as it’s authentic.”
Given that Ghosts is an ensemble-driven show, Trevor’s relationships with the other characters are also essential to its DNA.
When asked about a favorite dynamic on the show, Grodman had a tough time picking just one or two characters he loved seeing in scenes with Trevor, stating that the entire cast is incredible to work with.
However, he did highlight a couple of his favorite dynamics that he’d love to see more of.
Grodman pointed to Trevor and Sass as an iconic duo. “Those two specifically are usually in scenes together to cause trouble.”
He also mentioned that the relationship between Trevor and Hetty is fun to play with and added, “The fluctuation between battling and wanting each other is a blast.”
While Trevor may have countless strong bonds with fellow ghosts, his connection with the living is something Grodman hopes to explore, as Trevor doesn’t get much interaction with Sam.
As for what he’s most excited for fans to see in the upcoming season, Grodman revealed that a Halloween-themed episode is coming up soon.
“We’re going back to ancient Egypt,” he teased. “Something’s going to happen with a mummy.”
Grodman also shared a bit about the production process behind Ghosts, noting that the writers are writing the scripts as episodes of the season are being filmed, so actors often receive the scripts a few days before shooting.
He praised the production crew for creating such elaborate sets, like the ancient Egypt set for the Halloween episode, in such a short time.
“They built this well that Flower fell into, and did it in a matter of days. There’s so much artistry that’s going into it.”
On the cast’s end, the tight turnaround has led to extensive collaboration among actors and even with the crew.
“My greatest dream would be to direct on this show because I’ve gotten to know all these artists and what approach they all prefer,” Grodman remarked.
Five seasons into the show, the cast has also established a rhythm when it comes to preparing for shoot days.
“Everyone in the cast will come together, and we’ll rehearse on our own without a director and crew,” he said. “We’ll figure out the timing and the shape of the scene.”
Grodman ties the process of working with the new scripts back to the desire to “track the human side” of portraying outlandish ghosts.
“There’s always the challenge of needing to hit joke after joke. But the real question is, how do I make all that feel like it’s what a person would do?”
Grodman’s heartfelt and empathetic approach to the show and to this role has certainly made Trevor a character to watch in this upcoming season.
After all, who else can bring a smile and still deliver a hilarious pantless visual to the show like Trevor does?
Season 5 of Ghosts premieres on CBS on October 16th at 8:30 pm EST.
