It may have taken a little over ten years, but Breaking Bad series creator Vince Gilligan has finally returned with a new television series. After the massive success of Breaking Bad, Gilligan stayed in the criminal underworld of Albuquerque with the sequel movie El Camino, as well as returning to the small screen to write and direct the prequel/sequel series Better Call Saul. His next project, Pluribus, is a sci-fi thriller series that reunites Gilligan with Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn. While there has been plenty of mystery surrounding the series, a new trailer has finally been released.

When Pluribus was first revealed to the world, it came with a mysterious premise: “The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.” Even during his days on the production of Breaking Bad, Gilligan liked to be secretive about the future of the series, using subtle imagery and Easter eggs to provide clues about what direction the show could go in. It looks like the same can be said for Pluribus, as the one-minute teaser only showcases the eerie and unsettling situation that Carol (Seehorn) finds herself in, as it seems like the whole world is set out to make her happy.

In what seems like a complete shift in genre and tone for Gilligan, the teaser for Pluribus features a larger scale and teases something more sinister and supernatural at work. Watching large groups of people work in unison in trying to make one woman happy suggests that something in the realm of science fiction is at play. The teaser even ends with what looks like the President of the United States attempting to reason with Carol and telling her to “join” together with them. With that, the teaser comes to an abrupt end.

With ‘Pluribus,’ Vince Gilligan Wants To Subvert Every Sci-Fi Trope He Can

Vince Gilligan is no stranger to odd science fiction stories, especially since his earliest work was on the television series The X-Files. The classic sci-fi show had episodes that dealt with similar premises, such as the one at the heart of Pluribus. In an interview with TV Insider, Gilligan revealed that when it came to promoting the show and eventually releasing it, that he wanted to “keep a lot of it secret, and we tried to hit every [sci-fi] trope and turn it on its ear.” In that same interview, the creator stated he was inspired by series such as The Twilight Zone and films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which should help give fans a clue on what to expect when the series is eventually released.

What’s most exciting is that Pluribus reunites Gilligan with Seehorn, whom he had first met and worked with on Better Call Saul. Their most recent collaboration was in one of the final episodes of the series that Gilligan wrote and directed, titled “Water Works,” which featured what may be Seehorn’s most emotional and powerful performance to date. With the two working together again, and Seehorn playing a character completely different from Kim Wexler, Pluribus is sure to be another incredible addition to Apple TV+’s lineup.
