At the end of the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 2 finale, Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) jumps into a portal, which led many fans to believe that she was dead. Now, David Henrie, who plays Justin Russo, has confirmed her fate in a new interview.
During the finale, Morsus (Tobias Jelinek), an evil wizard, reveals that his son, Damian, could fulfill the prophecy because he had the power to open the rift. “But then he betrayed me for her,” he said, pointing to Alex.
“Me?” she asked. Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) had the choice to go with him — since she is the next one to fulfill the prophecy — or have her entire family hurt. As Billie conjured up a portal, Alex began to cry. A teardrop fell onto a Penwolf (Morsus’ real name) locket, which revealed her secret to everyone.
A flashback revealed that Alex is actually Billie’s mom — except no one remembered that fact because Alex wiped everyone’s memories when she dropped Billie off at the wizard’s boarding school when she was younger. She did this to keep Billie away from her evil grandfather, Morsus.
Morsus was angry that Alex kept Billie a secret from his son, but Alex said it was his idea. Justin’s youngest son, Milo (Max Matenko), untied the family with magic, and they all surrounded Morsus. Alex apologized to Billie, who understood.
The portal wouldn’t close unless someone went through it, so Alex sacrificed herself so Billie wouldn’t jump through. As a result, fans believed Alex is dead, but Henrie has set the record straight.
Talking with Us Weekly, he said, “When you make something, you have certain expectations, and then when it comes out, there’s a whole other set of expectations that you had no idea are going to emerge.”
“I didn’t think in a million years anyone would think Alex was dead. In fact, nobody making the show thought people would assume Alex is dead,” he continued.
However, Henrie did not disclose where Alex is. It will be revealed if the Disney Channel show is picked up for Season 3. He also confirmed that a Season 3 would delve into who Billie’s father is, which means exploring Alex’s past, which could bring in stars from Wizards of Waverly Place.
As for who could play Damian, Henrie had heard the fan requests for Jordan Fisher, but he would love to work with Lamorne Morris. “I think he would be amazing. I haven’t spoken to him about this yet, but I’m planning to when the time is right. And you know, who knows what happens?” Henrie said about Morris.
