New 135-Minute Sci-Fi Thriller Officially Stomps Past the Highest-Rated Movie in History at the Box Office

For three weeks, the most unlikely hit in recent memory has been running the table in North America. You Can See Everything, the Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, became the highest-rated feature film in Letterboxd history with a 4.8 average that cleared revered classics like Harakiri and 12 Angry Men, and its 9.4 on IMDb is currently threatening The Shawshank Redemption‘s decades-long reign.

Nathan Fielder’s Surprise Documentary Hit Has Finally Been Dethroned

It parlayed that acclaim into a Halloween weekend win, making it the first non-concert documentary to top the charts since Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004, and it has now banked over $70.9 million against a reported $7 million budget. That run at the top just ended, though, and the thing that ended it is 50 meters tall. Godzilla Minus Zero, Takashi Yamazaki’s 135-minute follow-up to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, roared to $6.7 million in Thursday previews, more than five times what the reigning champ pulled in across the same day. The preview figure is remarkable in its own right.

It’s the biggest in the history of distributor GKIDS, comfortably ahead of The Boy and the Heron‘s $2.39 million from 2023, and it more than triples the $2.1 million that Minus One collected before its $11.4 million debut three years ago. More strikingly, it edges past the $6.3 million Thursday posted by Legendary’s vastly more expensive Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019, which suggests the subtitled Japanese branch of the franchise has genuinely overtaken its Hollywood cousin with American audiences.

Godzilla Minus Zero Sequel Roars Past an Unlikely Box Office Champion

Tracking now points toward a $25 million to $35 million weekend, and if the sequel lands at number one it would become just the fourth non-English-language film ever to open atop the domestic chart, joining The Passion of the Christ, Hero, and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. The previews also offered a clean head-to-head with the weekend’s other hyped newcomer. Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, Nitesh Tiwari’s lavish adaptation of the Hindu epic whose teaser once sent fans stampeding to IMDb in numbers that briefly made it the top-rated film on the site before release, opened Thursday to $3.5 million from 1,433 locations.

Which kinds of non-English-language films are you most likely to pay to see on the big screen?

That’s a perfectly respectable start for an Indian epic in North America, and these films tend to build through diaspora word of mouth, but Godzilla nearly doubled it from preview screenings alone. As for whether the kaiju deserves the throne it’s seizing, the early signs are encouraging. Minus Zero sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, a shade below its predecessor’s 99% but strong for a darker, R-rated sequel that pits Godzilla against King Ghidorah, and it already set a single-day record for live-action films in Japan. You Can See Everything may keep its ratings crowns for a while yet, and probably should. But there’s something fitting about a three-hour meditation on hype being dethroned by the oldest, most reliable draw in genre cinema. Sometimes audiences just want the monster.
