“A Full Unknown,” “The Wild Robotic” (which has been sweeping the guild and honorary society awards), and “Music by John Williams” had been the reside motion, animation, and documentary winners on the 61st CAS Awards, held February 22 on the Beverly Hilton.
For TV, the Cinema Audio Society of sound mixers awarded “Masters of the Air,” “Shōgun,” and “The Bear” within the classes of non-theatrical/restricted sequence, one-hour, and half-hour.
As beforehand introduced, director Denis Villeneuve (“Dune: Half Two,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival”) acquired the CAS Filmmaker Award and multi-award-winning sound mixer Tod A. Maitland CAS (“A Full Unknown,” “West Facet Story,” “Joker”) was honored with the CAS Profession Achievement Award.
The CAS sound mixing win for “A Full Unknown” is the primary Oscar indicator for Finest Sound; in 4 out of the final 5 years the CAS winner has matched the Oscar winner. Now we look forward to the MPSE Golden Reel Awards to choose its sound enhancing winners this weekend for dialogue/ADR, results/foley work, and music enhancing.
“A Full Unknown’s” sound staff, led by Maitland, pushed James Mangold’s musical Bob Dylan biopic towards early ’60s authenticity. The numerous musical performances (in golf equipment, on the Newport Folks Competition, and in recording studios) had been completed primarily reside on set on the insistence of Finest Actor nominee Timothée Chalamet, who spent 5 years getting ready for the half.
