[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for NCIS Season 22 Episode 10 “Baker’s Man.”]
“It’s so out of left subject, however I feel it really works,” Rocky Carroll, who directed the NCIS midseason premiere, says of the explosive takedown within the episode.
What begins like another regular day for Parker (Gary Cole) — he picks up pastries from his favourite bakery — ends in two of his brokers caught up in an explosion and a doable reference to a brand new love curiosity, baker Eleni (Melina Kanakaredes). For some time, there’s a query of how a lot she is perhaps concerned in a drug enterprise that includes baking cocaine into her merchandise. However by the point she’s kidnapped and Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Knight (Katrina Regulation) discover her, it’s clear that she’s very a lot not concerned; she’s chained and being pressured to make cocaine-laced baked items.
It’s Eleni’s fast considering that retains Knight and Torres alive — and as her baking assistants. However collectively, they hatch a plan to flee (“not the best plan ever,” says Carroll), inflicting an explosion simply as Parker and McGee (Sean Murray) arrive on scene to help within the takedown. What Andrew Bartels wrote there created a “problem” for Carroll directing and manufacturing.
“There have been so many parts that needed to be created [for] that diversion,” Carroll tells us. “You needed to create the setting of the warehouse and the illicit cookies which can be being made, all of the stuff that’s occurring in manufacturing. We’ve bought the vats, we’ve bought our ovens, we’ve bought this totally mounted industrial kitchen that we’ve constructed, and now we bought to blow up it. Creating the particular results that create chaos and the aftermath of all that, when Parker and McGee are available in, there’s smoke, there’s soot within the air, there was an explosion, all this kind of chaos … That was fairly a day. It’s like half catastrophe movie, half NCIS.”
He admits that seeing all these parts on paper, “you’re considering to your self, ‘How are we going to make this work?’ However one way or the other we did and our particular results guys are so nice [with] all these little issues that you need to do [for scenes like this]. I feel the viewers goes to like it as a result of it’s so out of left subject, however I feel it really works. And no one backed away from it. No one stated, ‘Properly, that’s actually loopy.’ ‘Let’s see what occurs. Let’s do it.’ And everyone was on board. However I feel it performs effectively.”
Carroll shares that they shot the explosion, the aftermath, the takedown, and the scene of Parker and Eleni speaking on the again of the ambulance all in the identical “very full day.” He calls that second for the agent and baker “full circle. He begins to be taught extra about her and what her true passions are. It’s a very good story.”
