Guillermo del Toro has made an unsurprisingly strong pitch for the Grim Reaper, revealing that he not only doesn’t fear death, but is a “big fan” of it.

During a recent talk at the Marrakech Film Festival in Morocco (via Variety), the filmmaker behind such dark works as Pan’s Labyrinth, Mimic, and most recently, Frankenstein, said he was looking forward to the end of his life.

“Why should you want to live longer?” del Toro stated. “I’m a big fan of death… I think death is really good. I’m certainly looking forward to it, because it’s the day you go, ‘Well, tomorrow I won’t have any problems.’”

This philosophy certainly isn’t out of line with projects such as Hellboy and The Strain, which take on the very meaning of life while focusing on demons and vampirism. And of course, Frankenstein grapples with the consequences of playing God.

Considering the increasing amount of bad news that floods our timelines, maybe del Toro has a point. Find pleasure in whatever you can and enjoy life as much as possible without worrying about when it will come to an end, because everyone dies one day.

Starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, Frankenstein is now streaming on Netflix. Be sure to check out our own Liz Shannon Miller’s review, in which she calls it “the definitive take on Shelley’s classic tale.”
