In an unexpected licensing drop, the Amazon Prime Video original series Hunters is now available to stream on Netflix. It’s a surprising addition to the streaming library, especially because, at one point, Hunters was a flagship original series for Prime Video, and heavily promoted as being part of its growing slate of content. Licensing deals for various movies and television shows have always been tricky, and the idea of putting one streamer’s original series onto a competing platform is becoming less rare every day. Case in point, the star-studded cast of Hunters and the two-season run of the series can now be found on Netflix.
The television series Hunters was created by David Weil, and executive produced by Jordan Peele (best known for directing films such as Get Out and Nope) and first premiered on Prime Video in Feb. 2020. Upon its second season renewal, Prime Video also announced that the second season would be its last before release. Taking place in 1977 New York City, Hunters focuses on a team of vigilantes who hunt down high-ranking Nazi officers who are hiding under false identities in the United States. The titular hunters are in a race against the clock to find and kill the Nazis who are planning on creating a Fourth Reich in the U.S.
What’s most captivating about Hunters is its impressive ensemble cast, led by Al Pacino, who plays Meyer Offerman, the wealthy leader of the Hunters. The main character of the series is Jonah Heidelbaum (Logan Lerman), a young recruit with whom the audience first discovers the Hunters alongside. Hunters fills the rest of the cast with Jerrika Hinton, Josh Radnor, and Carol Kane. The first season of the conspiracy drama series ran for 10 episodes for Season 1 in 2020, with Season 2 releasing in 2023 and consisting of eight episodes.
‘Hunters’ Is a Well-Received Prime Original That Is Now Available on Netflix
While the first season of Hunters received mostly positive reviews with a 65% “fresh” rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes based on 110 reviews, the second and final season was more well-received. Hunters Season 2 has a 71% “certified fresh” rating, though only with 21 reviews as opposed to the 110 the first batch of episodes received. The show boasts an exciting premise with captivating leads, showcasing an alternate history that also tells a timely political message that many can resonate with. While critics say that the series doesn’t completely live up to its revenge-fantasy potential, the second season provides a conclusion that feels satisfying after all the buildup across 18 episodes.
Overall, Hunters is a surprising addition to the Netflix catalog, especially since it is also available to stream on Prime Video. However, other sites like What’s on Netflix report that this may be due to the underlying rights to the series belonging to Sony Pictures Television, and that Hunters may have already passed its exclusive window to Prime Video. That same site reports that the license for Hunters to be on Netflix is only for a single year, so now is as good a time to watch it if you’re a Netflix subscriber and don’t have access to Prime Video.
