Academy Award winner Christian Bale takes the lead as a man slowly put on a path of revenge in this underrated, gritty crime thriller that’s now streaming free. For years now, Bale has proven himself to be one of the most talented and most powerful actors of his generation, and while this 2013 thriller may have largely been forgotten, The Dark Knight star delivers yet another captivating performance in this story of a tortured man searching for his missing brother.
Directed by Scott Cooper from a screenplay by Cooper and Brad Ingelsby, and produced by the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Ridley Scott, Out of the Furnace features a stacked cast alongside Christian Bale that includes Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoë Saldana, and Sam Shepard. While Out of the Furnace bombed at the box office, grossing just $15.7 million against its $22 million budget, Christian Bale and gritty crime thriller fans can stream the movie for free now thanks to Tubi. Check out the official synopsis below…
“Steelworker Russell Baze (Christian Bale) works a dead-end job and holds tight to his sense of family, duty and loyalty. Rodney Baze (Casey Affleck), Russell’s brother, returns home after serving in Iraq and, with his debts piling up, becomes entangled with a vicious crime lord (Woody Harrelson). Soon afterward, Rodney disappears mysteriously. The police fail to solve the case, so Russell — feeling he has little left to lose — puts his life on the line to bring his brother home.”
‘Out of the Furnace’ Is Well Worth Watching Thanks to Its Stellar Cast
Out of the Furnace does not count itself among Christian Bale’s highest-ranked movies (that honor goes to the likes of The Dark Knight, American Hustle, and The Fighter) and is instead one of his most divisive. This is quickly reflected on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics rating the movie 53% alongside a similar 52% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. However, critics recommend watching the movie regardless thanks to its talented cast, with the consensus reading, “While it may not make the most of its incredible cast, Out of the Furnace is still so packed with talent that it’s hard to turn away.”
Audiences largely echo these sentiments, with Rotten Tomatoes users applauding the “Excellent acting from stellar cast,” calling Out of the Furnace a “Great film well directed as usual ..Great cast . As usual RT score not justified,” and declaring it “Massively underrated.” The biggest issue among audiences seems to be the movie’s pace, with one user describing it as “painfully slow.” However, this user thinks that a “you” problem, saying, “Anyone who says this movie is too slow or boring, this is a movie that actually makes you think and feel. Go back to watching stupid ass Marvel/DC films that don’t require any of that.”
Christian Bale continues to transform himself for roles, with his next two projects being no exception. The acclaimed actor will first take on the role of Frankenstein’s monster in director Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! before playing Al Davis alongside Nicolas Cage as John Madden in the upcoming sports biopic, Madden.
