With HBO’s Harry Potter currently in production, the fantasy reboot has not shied away from remaining in the headlines, for better or worse. While much of the discourse has been far from wholesome, Daniel Radcliffe recently revealed that he sent a letter to the young cast, which was a breath of fresh air. Now, the star of HBO’s reboot has reacted to Radcliffe’s kind words.
In an interview with the BBC’s Saturday Mash-Up! Live (via Variety), Harry Potter star Dominic McLaughlin reacted to receiving the letter from the film franchise’s original star. The young actor is still busy filming the highly anticipated series, an experience he says has been “amazing” so far. While heading home on a train, McLaughlin was handed a letter by his father, which he eventually found out was from his iconic predecessor. Of course, he did not reveal the exact contents of Radcliffe’s letter, but it was clear that McLaughlin more than appreciated the gesture.
“It was insane. My Dad tapped me on the train and just gave me this letter. I read it and then I got to the bottom, and it said, ‘Dan R.’ I was going mad, but I had to [keep cool]. I was on the train.”
Previously, Radcliffe detailed his thought process behind sending the new Harry Potter actor a letter. Although many find the HBO reboot unnecessary (and outright controversial due to J.K. Rowling’s involvement as executive producer), Radcliffe kept things simple when addressing his young replacement. He had nothing but kind words for McLaughlin, who he hopes has an even “better time” than he did filming the movie franchise.
“I just wanted to write to him to say, ‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time that I did – I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time…’ I just see these pictures of him and the other kids, and I just want to hug them. They just seem so young. I do look at them and say, ‘Oh, it’s crazy I was doing that at that age.’ But it’s also incredibly sweet, and I hope they’re having a great time.”
