Shortly after becoming a household name in HBO’s Euphoria (which has finally wrapped its third season) and the first season of The White Lotus, Sydney Sweeney attempted to bring back the now-forgotten R-rated thriller with 2021’s The Voyeurs. The film was risqué, tense, and incredibly divisive when it was released directly on Prime Video. But when The Voyeurs was added to the free streaming platform, Tubi, it exploded in popularity. However, all good things must come to an end, and The Voyeurs will soon be searching for a new streaming home.
The Voyeurs‘ time on Tubi might be coming to an end very soon. While the free streamer hasn’t given an official date, the film is currently listed on Tubi’s “Leaving Soon” section for US audiences. It is presumed that the film will leave Tubi sometime in December, having had a good few months on the free streaming platform. But, until Tubi confirms an official date, December is the best guess fans have for The Voyeurs‘ departure from the platform.
If you’ve never heard of The Voyeurs before, we can’t exactly blame you. The film barely made a scratch among Prime Video’s increasingly expanding streaming library. The film was written and directed by Michael Mohan (Immaculate) and starred Justice Smith, Ben Hardy, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo alongside Sweeney. Smith and Sweeney play Thomas and Pippa, a young couple who move into their dream apartment. When they realize their window overlooks the next apartment block over, they begin to have fun peeping on their neighbors. But fun begins to turn into a compulsive obsession for Pippa. The official synopsis reads:
“After moving into a beautiful loft apartment in Downtown Montreal, a young couple (Sydney Sweeney and Justice Smith), find themselves becoming increasingly interested in the sex life of their eccentric neighbors across the street (Ben Hardy and Natasha Liu Bordizzo). What starts out as an innocent curiosity slowly turns into an unhealthy obsession, after they discover that one of these neighbors is cheating on the other. Temptation and desire cause their lives to become tangled together in unexpected ways, leading to deadly consequences. Breathing new life into the forgotten genre of erotic thriller, The Voyeurs asks the question, “Is it okay to watch?””
“Is It Okay to Watch” ‘The Voyeurs’?
The Voyeurs is a commentary on, well, voyeurism, and our obsession with peering into other people’s drama and personal lives. With that in mind, should you watch The Voyeurs, or is it better left to its own devices?
Well, neither the critics nor general audiences can help you with that one. The film holds a split 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences. Even Letterboxd users, who notoriously enjoy a risqué R-rated thriller, are divided by The Voyeurs. Some say the film wants to have its cake and eat it, like the perfectly concise review “Sydney Sweeney hot,” while others view The Voyeurs as a misunderstood hidden gem, like this user, who wrote:
“A twisty ode to Hitchcock/De Palma that effectively captures that specific, strange eroticism of going to the optometrist. at its best when leaning into the stickiness of voyeurism vs. exhibition, of the power inherent in the act of looking. nice to see someone trying to revive and modernize the erotic thriller — also, Sydney Sweeney is a star!”
