Dave Burd, the co-creator and star of the FX comedy series Dave, is set to expand his resume with an animated feature. Burd is a noted rapper who performs under the name Lil Dicky. The multi-platinum artist saw his debut, “Professional Rapper,” reach No. 7 on the Billboard charts, with his 2024 album, “Penith (The Dave Soundtrack)”, acting as the soundtrack to his hit FX series Dave. The show was heavily inspired by Burd’s real life, featuring notable cameos such as Rachel McAdams and Drake. The Season 3 final even surprised audiences with an appearance from Brad Pitt rapping.
Since the third season of Dave ended, fans have wondered what creative endeavor Burd would pursue next in TV or film. THR now reports that the rapper and comedian is in talks with DreamWorks to produce an animated feature film that he pitched. The noted animation studio also seems to have won out in a potential bidding war. Plot details are still under wraps, but given the potential fervor surrounding the pitch, studios are clearly excited by the concept, with DreamWorks looking to win out.
Those familiar with Dave and Lil Dicky may assume the film is geared toward more mature audiences, with humor akin to Sausage Party, but that may not be the case. Burd told THR in 2023 that he had lofty aspirations, pointing to the actor’s interest in creating award-winning art beyond what most fans may know him for.
I’m not going to play, like, the comedic side character in a sh**ty comedy. I want to be in things that are up for best picture discussion, or I want to make my own revolutionary comedy or drama. I mean, I named my production company Gr8 Films because I want to be synonymous with the best level of art.
Is There Another Season of ‘Dave’ on the Way?
Shifting from Dave to a potentially family-friendly animated awards contender could appear drastic. Still, the talented multi-hyphenate has always pushed the envelope with his songs and comedy, making animated films a new area to explore. Working on an animated feature takes time, and current news paints it in its infancy, with it likely being years before it finds its way to release. During that time, fans may hope for more Dave, but there’s no guarantee it will happen.
When the third season of Dave concluded in 2023, the star and co-creator chose to explore other avenues rather than rush into producing another season. The door is open for a fourth season of the FX comedy series, letting fans know that it “does not rule out the possibility of doing something in the future.” That could also mean that Burd and FX could even collaborate on a separate project, but that remains to be seen, with no current plans for Dave Season 4. Still, Burd looks to have a busy schedule thanks to DreamWorks, and his Lil Dicky persona is sure to continue.
