Stranger Things will begin its final season in just a few days, with Netflix set to premiere the first chapter of the series’ fifth and final season later this week. The excitement for the show’s return is palpable as fans will reunite with their beloved characters after a long hiatus. Many are eager to find out what the creators Matt and Ross Duffer have prepared for the finale, while others are already thinking about what they will see next in the franchise. And as it turns out, things are far from over in the Stranger Things universe. The Duffers have talked about the previously announced spin-off, and per their comments, the live-action series is “moving forward” at Netflix.
The Duffers recently sat down to talk to Deadline about Stranger Things and what’s coming after Season 5. Theirs is a peculiar case, as the duo decided to part ways with the streamer earlier this year, and have signed a contract with Paramount, which will allow them to pursue other endeavors unrelated to Stranger Things. However, the show is their property and anything related to it will surely have their input. This, of course, includes the live-action spin-off that will continue the adventures of someone in the Hawkins gang.
“We are moving forward with it,” Matt says, while also explaining that star Finn Wolfhard actually guessed who the spin-off is about. “Netflix, they finally know what it is. We held it. They were so frustrated. We just would not tell them. Finn guessed what it was. So he was the only one who knew.” Ross adds, “I think he might have forgotten, though, honestly, because last time he brought it up, I was like, ‘That’s not what it is.’ Maybe he was just being coy. I don’t know.” Matt continues talking about the actor’s lucky guess:
“That’s the funny thing, because everyone freaked out that he had revealed what the spin-off was. I think he forgot. I actually need to talk to him about it, but anyway, now everybody at Netflix knows. They’re very excited behind it there. I’m really excited about the team we’ve assembled that I can’t talk about without potentially getting into trouble, but we’ll put out more information soon. We’re trying to get it to go pretty quickly. So, hopefully, it’s going to happen soon.”
What Will Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ Spin-Off Be About?
By this point, the upcoming Stranger Things spin-off could be focused on any character. Obviously, after the finale airs, this may suffer some changes because some of the characters will surely be killed off in the series’ conclusion. When sharing the details of the spin-off, Matt doesn’t reveal its main character. However, he does say that it heavily differs from the regular series, and that they will still be heavily involved, regardless of the deal with Paramount:
“The spinoff idea is something that Ross and I came up with that we’re extremely excited about. It’s quite different, though, than Stranger Things. So I think the key is that it’s coming from a place of passion, whether it’s from us or from somebody else. It’s not an assignment. It’s not forced like that. You’ve just seen that too many times. The market, it’s diminishing returns at a certain point. You want it to feel special when it comes out. I want, if something’s coming out with a Stranger Things title on it, it’s good, it’s quality. So Ross and I are going to remain very, very involved, even though we’re going to be at Paramount. In fact, we’re busy working on the spin-off idea right now.”
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is due to be released on Netflix on November 26, 2025, followed by the second part on December 25, and the series finale on December 31.
