Earlier this week, 24 fans were given the best indication yet that the groundbreaking action series could be returning to screens in the not too distant future. But the one thing everyone really wants to know is whether Kiefer Sutherland could be bringing Jack Bauer back into the action after his absence from 24: Legacy in 2017.
Jack Bauer’s last appearance in the franchise was in 2014’s 24: Live Another Day, which found Jack as a federal fugitive working with former CTU data analyst Chloe O’Brian to stop an assassination attempt on President James Heller. At the end of the season, Jack is seen giving himself up to Russian agents, meaning his fate has never been addressed. Speaking to MovieWeb, Sutherland opened up on whether we could finally see Jack back on screens after more than a decade.
“Well, I would love it. I love playing that character, and it would be nice to figure out a way to tell a story that has an end. There’s a lot of moving parts. Howard Gordon has written something that I thought was really interesting and exciting. It would be something that I’m certainly open to doing. I’ve certainly said that before. The people that are responsible for paying for it, they have to make their decisions based on other criteria, and so we’ll see what happens. If it happens, I’d be thrilled to do it, and if it doesn’t, we’ll find other stuff.”
The Return of ’24’ Could Finally Bring Jack Bauer’s Story to a Close
As Sutherland hinted, Jack Bauer’s story never really came to an end. After not being involved in 24: Legacy – which was canceled after just one season – fans would love to see what happened to Jack, and after 10 years, they have probably waited long enough for answers.
Earlier this week, 24 showrunner Howard Gordon, who is currently riding high on Netflix with his new thriller, The Beast in Me, revealed that after many years, there is finally a good chance of a 24 revival…and he would clearly love for Sutherland to be involved. He told Deadline:
“I have such a nostalgia for that show, and I think Kiefer does too. One thing we couldn’t figure out for a long time was a direction that ever held water, that sustained itself. This feels like it could be, but it’s not formal, it’s not done. And there’s a part of me that also feels like, particularly at this point in my career and in my life, what I really don’t want to happen is that it’s not good because I don’t think that’s fair to the show. It’s not fair to the fans, not fair to, frankly, to myself. So it has to be something that you connect to, or at least you tell yourself you’re connected to. It may not turn out very well, but you have to at least believe that it’s something.”
2026 will be the 25th anniversary of the first season 24, and it would be a fantastic birthday present if the series announced a comeback to mark the occasion. While everyone waits to see if this revival can become a reality, all seasons of the show are available on Hulu/Disney+.
