One of the biggest debates about the upcoming reboot of the James Bond franchise is exactly what Amazon MGM Studios will want to change about the long-running spy saga. Many fans have worried that there will be some significant changes made when 007 finally returns to screens in the next few years under the direction of Dune helmer, Denis Villeneuve. Now, a former James Bond director has weighed in with some simple and stark advice for the new team.
While there are some former directors of big franchises that don’t want to really give advice to their successors. Martin Campbell, who directed Goldeneye and Casino Royale, is not one of them. When asked during an interview with Gold Derby about his thoughts on the upcoming reboot following Daniel Craig’s exit, Campbell was happy to give a blunt, common sense response.
“Don’t break what isn’t broken. It doesn’t need to be a reboot — it just needs to be a bloody good Bond film! If we released GoldenEye or Casino Royale again next week, they’d feel just as potent. So don’t f*** with it, basically. There’s a lot of fertile ground for Bond, particularly the way the world is at the moment. I just hope that they don’t break what’s not broken!
What Will the Next James Bond Movie Look Like?
Daniel Craig departed the role of James Bond following No Time to Die in 2021. Having played the super-spy in five movies, it was time for the actor to move on to different things. His final contribution was a $774.2 million box office result, and an ending that shockingly killed off the world’s most famous spy for the first time in his history.
Since then, there have been several questions as to how the franchise will move forward. While it seemed that Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson were going to be heading up the next chapter in the franchise, everyone was surprised when the pair sold the creative rights over to Amazon MGM Studios. While many fans declared this to be the death of the franchise, with Amazon expected to turn it into a huge universe of spinoffs and prequels, there has been very little movement on the next Bond movie.
This year, it was revealed that Amy Pascal and David Heyman would be producing the new movie. While a few months later Villeneuve was added as director. Now the next step is to decide who will play James Bond, something else there has been a lot of time taken over. There has been no shortage of names on the list when it comes to who fans believe could potentially play James Bond, including old favourite Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor, Johnson, and newcomers like Austin Butler, Jacob Elordi and even Spider-Man star Tom Holland.
No one doubts that Villenueve has the capabilities of making a great James Bond movie, but there are many moving parts and plenty of pitfalls to be avoided. Choosing the next actor to take on the role of the world’s most famous spy is just the first of many hurdles still to be crossed before Bond can return to screens. In the next few years.
