Backengrillen, an experimental band featuring three members of legendary hardcore act Refused, have announced their debut album, a self-titled effort arriving January 23rd via Svart Records.
The announcement comes a month before Refused play their final shows ever, as part of their farewell tour. The band will close out its career with a series of concerts in their native Sweden, culminating with a pair of gigs December 20th and 21st in their hometown of Umea.
Backengrillen (Swedish for “back grill”) features Refused members Dennis Lyxzén (vocals), Magnus Flagge (bass), and David Sandström (drums) alongside saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, who has worked with Sonic Youth, Jim O’Rourke, and others.

Last month, Sandström announced that all four members of Refused, including guitarist Mattias Bärjed, would form a new band after the hardcore veterans break up, but it appears as if that may be a different project than Backengrillen, which does not involve Bärjed.
A description of Backengrillen from the band on its Bandcamp page reads as follows:
“Backengrillen’s music is a paean to chaos and destruction. The basic idea is to take a death/doom metal, or noiserock riff and play it until it loses meaning and then break it apart like a ravenous cat would a tiny forest mouse. It’s filled to the brim with the self-hatred endemic to the province of Västerbotten from whence the member’s hail. The record was written on a Thursday during their first ever rehearsal, performed live on a Friday and recorded on a Saturday, so what you’re hearing is raw, stupid, gut instinct music played by seasoned purveyors of hardcore punk, metal, free jazz, noise et cetera.”
The band added, “Record no 2 is in the making, less stupid, more ugly. Stay tuned and fuck the pigs.”
