In the new trailer for Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, its titular character, played by Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet, really loves playing table tennis. So much so that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to pursue his passion for the sport, a choice that pulls him into the kind of chaos familiar to fans of other Safdie movies.
The film’s official synopsis, according to A24, is simply “Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.” In addition to Chalamet, the cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A’Zion, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher, the latter playing Marty’s mother.
Marty Supreme is only being made by one-half of the team behind Good Time and Uncut Gems, as the Safdie brothers split off in 2025 for their own unconventional sports biopics: Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine premiered earlier this year, with a transformed Dwayne Johnson starring as real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr. The key difference, besides subject matter and star, is that Marty Supreme is much more loosely based on the life of table tennis champion Martin Reisman.
