Sydney Sweeney has come out fighting in response to her latest film Christy gaining the unwanted accolade of having one of the worst box office openings for a wide-release movie ever. While the film struggled to make more than $650 per theater on average, Sweeney has shared her reaction on her Instagram account, sharing her pride in the movie despite what the numbers made say. She wrote:
“I am so deeply proud of this movie. Proud of the film David made. Proud of the story we told. Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. This experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives.
Thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. So yes I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life. Thank you Christy. I love you.”
The comments on Sweeney’s post are exactly what you would expect: those slamming the actress for one of several reasons, and those defending her against those same mostly toxic attacks.
Sydney Sweeney Could Still Deal a Knockout Blow to Her Critics
Sydney Sweeney’s year has not been her greatest. Despite having considerable box office success with Anyone But You and horror hit Immaculate, this year, has thrown several curveballs the actress’ way. Americana and Eden both delivered huge financial flops, and this past weekend Christy became her worst box office performance so far.
Adding to her woes has been a continued controversy around the actress’ ad campaign for American Eagle jeans, and her political affiliations – which is still one of the most prominent reasons for online trolls to take a shot at anyone online. However, even with all that against her, Sweeney could still have the last laugh with Christy.
The biopic will soon become available on VOD services, and then will move to streaming, where, like many movies that have had a rough theatrical run finally find their feet. While critics have had a mixed reaction to the movie, audiences have been incredibly positive to the point the film holds a near-perfect 98% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. Above all else, everyone has agreed that Sweeney’s performance is Oscar worthy.
It seems likely that Sweeney will be in the mix when it comes to the announcement of nominations for the Academy Awards, and others. Every nomination will be more than enough compensation for the box office disappointment the film has been, and every win even better. Despite Christy being a huge box office flop, its reviews do not paint a picture of a terrible move, just one that was made at the wrong time to be a hit.
