The critically panned remake of a ’90s cult classic action film is streaming for free, and audiences are obsessed with the “so bad it’s good” remake. It’s been 31 years since Brandon Lee donned the screen as The Crow in the aptly titled The Crow, based on James O’Barr’s comic book of the same name. The original film has gained a cult status for many reasons; mainly its tragic behind-the-scenes story involving Brandon Lee, which took the actor’s life during production. In 2024, Lionsgate tried to recapture the gothic magic of the 1994 original with a remake. While most remakes are lukewarm versions of the original movie, 2024’s The Crow crashed and burned, both at the box office and with fans. For those who didn’t want to pay to see The Crow remake, the film is now streaming for free.
The Crow remake is currently streaming on Tubi. They might not have paid to see it in theaters, but audiences can’t get enough of the film on Tubi, as The Crow remake is currently the eighth most popular movie on the free streaming platform. The remake of The Crow was directed by Rupert Sanders and based on a script by Zach Baylin and William Josef Schneider. Bill Skarsgard plays Eric in the remake, who gains mysterious powers to pursue those who killed his soulmate, Shelly (FKA twigs). The official synopsis reads:
“Soulmates Eric (Skarsgård) and Shelly (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”
To call The Crow remake a flop would be an understatement. The film was intended to be Lionsgate’s next big blockbuster, especially coming off the back of the financial failure that was Borderlands. However, The Crow grossed just $24 million during its theatrical run, against a budget of around $50 million. Even the original, which was considered a financial failure at the time (leading to its cult status), grossed over $50 million, which isn’t adjusted for inflation.
‘The Crow’ Remake Was Panned by Viewers and Critics
The Crow remake wasn’t just slated at the box office; the film was also maligned by most critics. It holds a dreary 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many of the reviews giving the film one star out of five. The audience score looks more promising on the surface, with a rating of 62%. But, if you dive a little deeper, you’ll see that even most of the positive reviews mingle around the three-star section, rather than a tidal wave of five-star reviews.
“The Crow remake is a new so bad it’s good contender,” read one user review. While some consider the film’s poor quality to be an enjoyable aspect, in the same way Madame Web or The Room are enjoyable, others simply hated the movie, as another user wrote, “This is what happens when the studio, writer, director, and actors do not look at, understand, or respect the source material. This film is an absolute travesty compared to the original.”
