It’s the spooky season, and everyone has their favorite Fall series or movie that they come back to every single year. You might prefer a proper horror movie or a light-hearted Disney classic. But, for many, the Fall season only means one thing: an excuse to re-watch the cult-classic animated series, Over the Garden Wall. The cult series was released on Cartoon Network back in 2014 and ran for a single season. Those who have seen the series instantly fall in love with it, thanks in part to its short episodes and episode count, as well as its insanely quotable lines, off-kilter comedy, and adorable animation. Over the Garden Wall truly is a Fall staple, and its success on the streaming charts only proves that.
Fans have already burned a spooky-sized hole in their credit cards, because Over the Garden Wall is currently the most popular series on the Amazon store. The show featured a surprisingly stacked cast, with countless major guest stars. Elijah Wood features as Wirt with child actor Collin Dean playing his adorable brother Gregory, who, as the title suggests, find themselves in a mysterious world known as the Unknown after (you guessed it) climbing a garden wall. Melanie Lynskey leads the supporting cast as Beatrice, the talking bird, with guest stars who include Christopher Lloyd, John Cleese, Bebe Neuwirth, and Tim Curry.
To call Over the Garden Wall a cult classic would be an understatement. The series received little fanfare when it was released back in 2014. There aren’t even enough critics’ reviews to generate a Rotten Tomatoes score. However, over the years, the show has gained a very strong cult following, which has earned it a near-perfect 98% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While the best part about Over the Garden Wall is the vibes, the story is also engrossing, as the official synopsis reads:
“On an adventure, brothers Wirt and Greg get lost in the Unknown, a strange forest adrift in time. A wise old woodsman and bluebird Beatrice help them find their way. Along the way, Wirt’s thoughts envelop him, while the wonder of the surroundings preoccupy Greg.”
Will ‘Over the Garden Wall’ Ever Get a Second Season?
It’s been 11 years since Over the Garden Wall first debuted on Cartoon Network, and the fan base is still holding out hope for a second season. The series might have flopped at the time, but there’s certainly a strong enough fan base to make a potential Season 2 a success for CN, or whichever network picks up the show (it’d probably go direct to streaming now).
However, 11 years on, and there is still no sign of Over the Garden Wall Season 2 on the horizon (the horizon being a garden wall, in this instance). But, even though a full second season might be a pipe dream, fans were treated to a very special treat last year. The series received a three-minute-long stop-motion anniversary special in 2024 to celebrate 10 years of Over the Garden Wall. It might not be the complete revival fans were hoping for, but we’ll never say no to more from Gregory and Wirt.
