It sometimes feels like TV shows lose their way, and that’s certainly the case with Ghosts.
When the U.S. comedy series began, it focused on a group of spirits at Woodstone Manor with one goal: to be “sucked off.”
It was the exact same goal as the spirits in the British counterpart, with the British series offering them hope by the fourth season.

There was a sudden reminder to viewers that the ghosts all have one goal, and now the U.S. version has done the same.
Carol’s Sacrifice Was Necessary
In the Ghosts Season 5 premiere, we all wondered how Jay was going to get out of his deal with the devil.
I did suspect that one of the spirits would sacrifice themselves, but I honestly thought that it was going to be Patience.
If I’m honest, I forgot about Carol and some of her backstory.
Having Carol be the one to go made the moment even better, because, from a story point of view, it brings it all back to what the spirits in the house are fighting to achieve.

They don’t want to live this eternity any longer.
Well, some of them do, such as Trevor, who just learned in Ghosts Season 4 that he has a biological daughter out there, but not all of them want to stick around.
That’s been lost along the way, with so much focus on Sam and Jay’s dreams, the book deal, Sass’s need to lose his virginity, and even Thor and Flower’s relationship.
The Ghosts Season 5 premiere moment opens up the conversation about moving on again.
We can see that both Pete and Patience are shocked to find out that all it took was to make this sacrifice to be “sucked off,” and it’s clear that they now have that reminder that they would like to go to the afterlife.

Now the Ghosts Can Grow Again
Ghosts was running the risk of getting a little stale at times, especially as there are only so many ways the spirits can learn their lessons.
That’s part of the story.
They couldn’t move on because they still had lessons to learn about their personalities, and now that Carol has learned hers, the spirits can see that it is possible to move on in the afterlife.
They need to find their own ways of doing that, though.

I guess the series has never really touched on what exactly the spirits need to do to move on.
They, like we, just have their own theories about it, but now they have confirmation.
The ever-selfish Carol had a moment of empathy and caring by giving up her soul for someone she barely even knew.
Sure, Carol had been in the house and met Jay, but she didn’t hang out with him as much as the likes of Pete or Sass, so actively making that sacrifice to send her own soul to hell was a major step.

And it wasn’t just for Jay.
She also did it for Pete, realizing all of the hurt and pain she’d caused him over the years.
As Pete was willing to sacrifice himself for Jay, she knew the only way to show Pete she did care for him and was sorry for the pain she caused was to make the deal herself.
Now it’s time for the rest of the spirits to take note, so that they can figure out their own ways of being “sucked off.”

This is all personal to each spirit, and Ghosts Season 5 needs to highlight that, which it has thankfully started to do with Episode 2.
In fact, as I suspected, we had Trevor and Sass trying to be helpful to Sam to move on to the afterlife, which hilariously defeats the whole point of a sacrifice.
However, and as much as I love the Main eight ghosts, it is time for one of them to be “sucked off,” and Ghosts Season 5 is the time to do it now that we’ve had the reminder via Carol.
