Ethan Hawke further proved he’s one of Hollywood’s most illustrious leading men when he once again ventured into the world of horror with the 2021 film The Black Phone. In the movie, the Oscar-nominated actor delivered a truly terrifying performance as a sadistic serial killer known as the Grabber, who targets children in 1970s Colorado. The supernatural flick also featured How to Train Your Dragon star Mason Thames as a teenager abducted by the masked murderer, with the boy encountering a mysterious black phone while in captivity that connects him to the Grabber’s past victims.

Based on the Joe Hill short story of the same name, the original horror hit grossed $161.4 million worldwide and earned positive praise from critics, with its impressive performance ultimately leading to the 2025 sequel, Black Phone 2. Both Hawke and Thames reprised their respective roles for the follow-up, as did fellow stars Madeleine McGraw and Jeremy Davies. Like its predecessor, the film is frightening audiences all around the world. The release of Black Phone 2 is perfectly timed with spooky season, and fans can’t help but wonder when the sequel will make its way to streaming.

What To Know About the Digital Release of ‘Black Phone 2’

Black Phone 2 was produced by Blumhouse Productions and distributed by Universal Pictures. Like Blumhouse’s previous movies and their respective release schedules, the horror film is expected to be ready to stream from home on Peacock roughly 90 days after its initial theatrical debut. Since the supernatural sequel premiered on October 17, 2025, eager fans can expect Black Phone 2 to arrive on the platform during winter, with a tentative streaming date set for January 16, 2026. This date matches the patterns of other Blumhouse projects, as shown below:

Blumhouse Productions is the creative mastermind behind some of cinema’s most exciting horror movies and thrillers, responsible for popular franchises like Paranormal Activity, M3GAN, and Five Nights at Freddy’s. Like its fellow 2025 releases, Wolf Man, The Woman in the Yard, and Drop, Black Phone 2 is distributed by Universal. This means that all their movies head to Peacock for the first four months of streaming before beginning 10 months of exclusivity on Prime Video. They then return to Peacock for four additional months before expanding to other subsequent platforms.

What Can Fans Expect From ‘Black Phone 2’?

Ethan Hawke is back and ready to embrace his demented side once again as the Grabber in Black Phone 2. The film picks up four years after the events of the original in 1982 and centers on Finney Black (Mason Thames) as he struggles to return to everyday life following his traumatic captivity at the hands of the psychotic serial killer. The Grabber returns to wreak havoc from beyond the grave and begins terrorizing Finney’s younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), who is starting to receive disturbing visions of boys who had been murdered at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake. Together, Finney and Gwen must find a way to stop the ruthless killer once and for all.

Following the massive worldwide success of The Black Phone in 2021, director Scott Derrickson and author Joe Hill decided to collaborate on a sequel. Hill stated that the follow-up was directly inspired by the “iconic imagery” of the Grabber’s masks. Hill is no stranger to having his works given the Hollywood treatment. His comic book Locke & Key was adapted into a TV series, along with his novel NOS4A2, while Horns was made into a full-length film. Black Phone 2 is steadily dominating movie theaters everywhere, grossing $32.5 million at the domestic box office and $48 million globally, surpassing its estimated $30 million budget.

Like the 2021 horror hit, Black Phone 2 has also received generally positive reviews from critics. Currently, it has a solid 74% Rotten Tomatoes score and 85% Popcornmeter from fans, with many appreciating how heavily the sequel was infused with violent blood and gore while fully embracing the slasher genre. Hawke was unsurprisingly in fine form as the vicious murderer, the Grabber, scaring up even more thrills and chills as he stalks Finney and Gwen from the afterlife and terrorizes their dreams, forcing them to make a final stand against him. The film is jam-packed full of pulse-pounding moments, an ominous atmosphere, and unsettling pacing, with The Reader declaring in their review:

“Between the camp setting, a blizzard, and the Grabber going Freddy Krueger, this is basically Friday the 13th set in The Shining with Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors. That is not a complaint.”

Black Phone 2 is in theaters now.
