The upcoming psuedo-Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, has plenty of excitement and speculation surrounding it. Ever since James Gunn, the writer and director of the film (and co-chairman of DC Studios), shared the cover page of the script, there has been a lot of theorizing about who exactly the villain would be, as well as how it connects to the larger DCU. Given that Man of Tomorrow wasn’t a part of the initially announced projects when James Gunn and Peter Safran first took over DC Studios, there’s been some curiosity about how it will impact the overarching Gods and Monsters story. Now, Gunn has provided some insight on the larger connotations of the movie, and how important previous entries in the DCU are to the semi-sequel.
In an interview with the Go Read Some Comics with Jenna YouTube channel, Gunn provided some insight into Man of Tomorrow’s connection to his last DCU project, Peacemaker Season 2, saying: “I don’t know what people have guessed, but Man of Tomorrow is really — it’s very, very connected to Peacemaker — but it’s also its own thing. I mean, it has its own story that’s separate from this.” Gunn hasn’t shied away from the movie’s connection to his television series, even captioning an Instagram post telling people to watch the “Man of Tomorrow prequel, Peacemaker.”
Many characters who were a part of Lex Luthor’s support team from Superman make an appearance in Peacemaker, and Nicholas Hoult even shows up as Luthor for one scene. Working alongside Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., Luthor’s team implement a plan to send metahumans to an alternate dimension to serve as a prison, calling the alien planet “Salvation.” Given how much Luthor has clearly influenced Flag at the end of the season, it’s not hard to see a possible connection between Man of Tomorrow, and the plans ARGUS and the government have for the metahuman prison.
James Gunn’s Next DCU Film Will Connect to ‘Peacmaker’s Season 2 Finale
The announcement of Man of Tomorrow’s release date also came with various comic book-inspired art of Superman and Lex Luthor in a power suit, indicating that the movie will be a team-up film between the two characters. With what seems to be a large focus on Luthor, the Salvation storyline could play a role in the upcoming movie, and could even address what happens to characters like John Cena’s Peacemaker. The season 2 finale of Peacemaker ended with the titular character becoming the very first prisoner on Salvation, something that has to eventually be resolved.
So far, James Gunn is still trying to keep a tightrope balance of letting new projects be their own individual thing, while still maintaining some world-building and complimenting films or shows that came before. There are still plenty of other things that need to be released before Man of Tomorrow, such as Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface, all of which could also connect to whatever may unfold in Man of Tomorrow that causes both Superman and Lex Luthor to team up and take on an unknown threat.
