Jordan is reportedly in early negotiations to take on the role of Ricardo Tubbs in Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tubbs was previously played by Phillip Michael Thomas in the original series and later by Jamie Foxx in the 2006 remake. The upcoming film will be a period piece set in the 1980s, the same era as the original series. Universal Pictures and Jordan have not commented on the potential casting news.
The 2006 big screen version of Miami Vice was incredibly divisive, with both audiences and critics delivering mixed reviews, with complaints of an underdeveloped story and lack of charisma between the movie’s leads compared to their TV counterparts.

This is not the first time that Michael B. Jordan has been linked to Miami Vice. In September 2025, Jordan and Glenn Powell were reportedly the top picks to lead Miami Vice. Powell was considered for the role of James Crockett, who was played by Don Johnson in the original 1980s series and then Colin Farrell in the 2006 feature film adaptation directed by Michael Mann. With Michael B. Jordan now in official talks, there might be credence to the idea that Glen Powell will be his co-star.
With Miami Vice set for an Aug. 6, 2027, release date, it will be a very busy year for Michael B. Jordan. Jordan is currently directing a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, in which he will also star. The Thomas Crown Affair is set for release on Mar. 5, 2027. It has been a passion project for Jordan, having been attached to The Thomas Crown Affair remake since 2016. Even though rumors suggest that 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars will bring back many past Marvel actors, it feels safe to say, don’t expect to see Jordan’s Human Torch show up in the film.
Despite Universal Pictures struggling to turn past television series, like The A-Team and The Fall Guy, into blockbuster franchises, Miami Vice is shaping up to be a breakout hit. Being helmed by the director of Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie, and being led by the star of Sinners and Black Panther, with the lead of Twisters, also potentially set as a co-star, is an exciting lineup. One that could drive interest among a new generation of moviegoers who might not be familiar with the original series.
