Taylor Sheridan’s many series seem to know how to evolve and expand, but very few of them know when to end. Even Yellowstone continues to add to its story following the conclusion of the flagship series, but it looks like one show that does have an endgame already in mind is Jeremy Renner-led Mayor of Kingstown, which is now in its fourth season.
Mayor of Kingstown may not deliver as many scandalous headlines as Yellowstone did, but it is regarded as one of Taylor Sheridan’s best shows and is a constantly strong performer on Paramount+. While Sheridan has not been an active writer on the show since its first season, he continues to produce, and co-creator Hugh Dillon revealed to ScreenRant on the Season 4 premiere red carpet, that Sherdian’s planned ending for the show has always been the target.
“I had worked with Taylor. He was my mentor for years as an acting coach. He coached me on 75 episodes of television. So over years, we would talk about TV and what we could do if we got to do it ourselves and dream. And he was a dude who could take apart worlds and characters. If I go to his house with a script, he could scan it so quickly and understand it, absorb it, digest and then relay it to me that when we got to actually our own work, he saw where it was going to end. We had the beginning. We rocked that first episode. He wrote that in two days, and we had that whole first season. But he’s seen it through to where it does end, wherever that is down in the future. He always had the end in sight, and then he taught me to do that as I’m writing, land the things you want to land, and then work backwards so know where it’s going to end.
“We had it before, where we sold the script. Taylor had it. Taylor had it in his head. We talked about where the whole thing goes, and this is where it’s going to end in whatever season it ends, but that’s part of what the fun was, because then we can fill in the rest of it, because we know where it’s ending.”
‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Is Set to Deliver Its Darkest Series Yet
Mayor of Kingstown could never be accused of being a light and airy show, but the show, considered to be one of Sheridan’s “grimmest” series, is about to get even darker with its latest season, which debuts on October 26. Season 4 will add to its strong cast, with Edie Falco joining the cast.
The new season will see Mike (Renner) dealing with the power vacuum left by the Russians, as well as the new warden of the prison, played by Falco. The recent trailer for Season 4 teases plenty of action, twists, and some new dangers ahead for Mike. In addition to Renner and Falco, the cast of Mayor of Kingstown features Lennie James, Laura Benanti, Taylor Handley, Tobi Bamtefa, Derek Webster, Hamish Allan-Headley, and Nishi Munshi. The official synopsis for the new season reads:
“In season four, Mike’s control over Kingstown is threatened as new players compete to fill the power vacuum left in the Russians’ wake, compelling him to confront the resulting gang war and stop them from swallowing the town. Meanwhile, with those he loves in more danger than ever before, Mike must contend with a headstrong new Warden to protect his own while grappling with demons from his past.”
