Shudder with The Horror Collective’s BloodStream. With a huge library of chilling classics, trashy monstrosities, and unseen terrors, this could be your new one-stop-horror-shop streamer of the future.
AMC Network’s Shudder has long been the go-to place for those looking for both well-known horror movies and forgotten low-budget abominations, especially as the nights grow darker and Halloween arrives. Now, as per The Hollywood Reporter, there is a little more choice coming with BloodStream offering to fill your nights with screams, ad-free, for just $5.99 per month or $59.99 a year. This is significantly lower than Shudder’s $8.99/$89.99 pricing for the same “without ads” plan. In short, it’s going to cause a bloodbath. How quaint.
With so many streaming platforms out there hiking their prices continually, the allure of a new streamer who undercuts them all could be a big draw, especially considering its horror-based library and the imminent arrival of Halloween. Backed by producer Shaked Berenson’s The Horror Collective (an indie label launched with Jonathan Barkan in 2019), BloodStream’s collected offerings include titles like The Wailing, Tony Todd-starring Werewolf Game, Hatchet, and Werewolf Bitches from Outer Space. Yes, it’s that kind of schlock we are dealing with.
Horror Is Back on Top
Along with Shudder, ScreamBox is another horror platform that has been pleasing lovers of dark, twisted, blood-soaked tales for years, but having another purveyor of lesser-known movies is not a bad thing right now.
Since the Covid pandemic, there has been a huge boom in horror movies that have been able to take small budgets and produce some big, imaginative hits. Movies like Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, ScreamBoat, and Popeye The Slayer Man have plundered public domain characters in order to cut their costs and bring some ultra-gory old school slashers back to the fore. These are grungy, dirty horror movies that were popular in the late 1980s, and fans are unable to get enough of them.
Add into this the massive success of the Terrifier franchise, and several big hits from Neon and A24, such as LongLegs, The Monkey, Bring Her Back, and Heretic, it is undeniable that horror is on a real surge right now. This means it could not be a better time for a new horror streaming platform to set up its stall and offer fans a cheap scare or two, particularly this month.
Although it seems unlikely that BloodStream will pose an immediate threat to the existence of either Shudder or ScreamBox, especially considering most of their content is made up of obscure movies and 50-year-old restorations, over time, if it keeps prices low, it could certainly be an alternate source of scares for many viewers.
