Are you ready for some more Voight and Imani action?
It appears that we’re headed back around to focusing on both Voight and Imani sooner than we could’ve anticipated, given that they were the prominent features of the season premiere.
Now, Chicago PD Season 13 Episode 4 will have Voight grappling with something from his past, and based on the episode stills and the promo, Imani will be right by his side as he deals with all of this and their impending case.
The hour, titled “Root Cause,” seems like it’ll be a way of extending things and highlighting this newfound partnership between Voight and Imani that we took notice of, and some of us had mixed reactions to, from Chicago PD Season 13 Episode 1.
But, interestingly, we’re going to revisit both characters so soon. The series has been resorting to the character-centric episodes for a while now.
And after Torres’ incredibly dark arc during Chicago PD Season 13 Episode 2 and that unique and rather compelling Burzek-focused episode last week (I do hate I missed the chance of reviewing that one for you guys, as it was a strong hour), it felt like Atwater would be next up on the roster.
But alas, Root Cause is an hour that will seemingly focus on Voight as a case from his past comes back up to haunt him in some significant way.
Or, and this is a possible avenue that many fans are speculating about, it’s not a case at all, but something more personal from his past coming to light.
The synopsis teases that the team will get pulled into investigating a string of robberies around the city. And though that, there’s some significant connection to one particular family.
Apparently, the secrets of that family are the reason why some of this is happening, and the fact that there are multiple robberies connected to one unit of people sounds interesting.
There’s nothing like family secrets rearing their ugly heads!
But, in this instance, it may not be the case itself that piques viewers’ interest most here! As the synopsis also teases that a surprising detail from Voight’s past resurfaces.
We have no way of knowing what constitutes a surprise here, especially since Voight is nothing remotely close to an open book! When it comes to him, it could be anything!
However, in the promo, we see that someone left a manila envelope on his windshield, and when he opens it up, there’s a picture of a beaten and badly bruised young boy in a hospital bed, and nothing more.
But who could it be, and why does this whole thing rattle Voight so much that he goes radio silent? Or relatively quieter than usual?
Could it be somehow related to his grandson, whom we haven’t seen since Chicago PD Season 4?!
After Justin’s murder, baby Daniel and his mother skipped town for their own safety and protection, and we haven’t seen or heard much about them since then.
Daniel would have to be around nine years old now. It’s hard to tell with the timeline and whether or not it aligns exactly with each season.
It’s also possible that this photo of a young person in a hospital could also be related to a case from the past or something else that Voight is grappling with.
Maybe it’s something we’ve seen or heard about before, or it could be something entirely new to viewers (and the unit).
Either way, it’s also an interesting angle to explore.
But it does prompt Imani to express concern or interest, as the prom has her badgering Voight with questions, trying to figure out what’s happening, and Voight not giving her any response at all.
It’s typical Voight behavior, but Imani either doesn’t know how to read the room or doesn’t care, because even though she comments on how many questions she knows she’s asking him, it’s doubtful that she’ll actually stop.
Interestingly, this will be another way of the season reestablishing that she and Voight feel more like legitimate equal partners rather than her serving as a subordinate to him.
Based on Imani’s attire in some of the stills and where she is and what surrounds her, it looks like she may have another instance of going undercover in some capacity.
And we also see Voight maybe at some type of meeting or something, so he could be undercover or scoping things out, too.
These are our thoughts about Chicago PD spoilers, but we want to hear your theories!
