Star Wars fans have had a rough time recently. While Lucasfilm has promised that the franchise will be making a big impression on the big screen again in the coming years, exactly what movies will do that has become a constantly shifting board of pieces. While The Mandalorian & Grogu is confirmed to be arriving in cinemas in 2026, with Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars: Starfighter arriving in 2027, there is one abandoned project that could finally be back on the table.
Since The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars has been confined to the small screen, with several TV shows being released on Disney+, including The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Acolyte. It was announced several years ago that Lucasfilm wanted to shift the focus of the franchise back to theatrical movie releases, and that saw several big announcements, such as James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi project, Daisy Ridley’s return in a New Jedi Order movie, and Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, all being in development. All of those movies have either seen delays or been scrapped (at least for now), and another project in that list was Donald Glover’s Lando movie.
According to Daniel Richtman, the Lando project is now back from the dead once again, and is in active development. Naturally, this kind of rumor comes along quite often, so it is best not to get too excited just yet. However, this is the first positive update the Lando movie has been given in over a year, since Glover himself said during an interview with The Wall Street Journal that he just wanted the movie “to be fun” if it was ever made.
Will ‘Lando’ Be Made, or Become Another Scrapped ‘Star Wars’ Idea?
The Lando project was originally set to be made as a TV series for Disney+ when it was announced five years ago. After three years in limbo, it was suggested that the show had pivoted to a movie release to fit with the new “return to cinemas” plan being put in place by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. However, there has been very little movement on the film since.
Fans were on board with the idea of Glover returning to the role he played in the underrated Solo: A Star Wars Story, and with the actor and his brother working on the script, it seemed like the kind of movie that would fit in with several other films that are breaking away from the Star Wars franchise’s obsession with the Skywalker family.
Whether this is a sign that Lando is once again actively being worked on, or yet another false start, the film is one of many projects that have been announced over the last six years. While a few have found their feet, the future of the Star Wars franchise is still not clear, and even the projects that are being developed are guaranteed to make it to the finish line. With Glover’s role as Lando Calrissian being one of the most praised casting choices of modern-era Star Wars, hopefully we have not seen the last of the character yet.
