Dua Lipa closed out the US leg of her “Radical Optimism Tour” at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday night by bringing out Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard for a duet of “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.” Watch a clip of the performance below.
During their rendition of Death Cab’s single off 2006’s Plans, Lipa and Gibbard’s voices matched up beautifully on the chorus as Gibbard strummed acoustic guitar. One night earlier, Lipa paid tribute to another local legend when Brandi Carlile joined her on stage to perform “The Story.”

In a recent Variety interview, Lipa spoke about her inspiration for covering songs by local artists in each city of the tour. “It came about purely because I had done a song for the American Country Music Awards with Chris Stapleton, and it was so much fun that I proposed it to the band and to the team: How fun would it be if every night we do a different song?” she explained. “And everyone was like, well that’s quite ambitious.”

“It’s been so exciting to exercise those muscles and being able to do so many different genres and songs and to collaborate with so many incredible artists and legends,” she continued, adding that doing the covers brought the touring band together. “It feels like we’ve done years of bonding learning these songs so quickly.”
On earlier “Radical Optimism Tour” stops, Lipa covered “The Less I Know the Better” with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, “Don’t Speak” with Gwen Stefani, and “Wake Me Up When September Ends” with Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. She also performed solo renditions of “Nothing Compares 2 U” in honor of Sinead O’Connor, Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” and TLC’s “No Scrubs,” among many others.
Lipa resumes with the Latin American leg of her tour in early November and she promises to continue covering local artists at each stop of the jaunt. Get tickets here.
