The death of Diane Keaton came as a shock to many of the Oscar-winning actress’ fans, friends and peers. Social media filled up with thousands of tributes and memories in the immediate hours after the news broke. While Keaton’s family initially requested privacy, they have now shared their own statement regarding the actress’ death and revealed her cause of death (via People).
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11. She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
According to several outlet sources, Keaton’s health declined “very suddenly” and was “heartbreaking for all who knew her.” They continued:
“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”
Diane Keaton’s Movies Have Surged on Streaming

In the days since her death, movies such as The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give, Annie Hall, Because I Said So, and Baby Boom leaped up the streaming charts. The Godfather, which was already a chart-topper on free streaming platform, Pluto, has maintained its position as their number one movie since Keaton’s death.
As an actress, Keaton’s work included several lauded performances, including her Oscar-winning role in Annie Hall, which also nabbed her a BAFTA, Golden Globe and several other prestigious awards. The actress was also nominated for prominent awards for a number of other movies, such as Reds, Manhattan, Something’s Gotta Give, and Marvin’s Room.
Following her death, among the many to pay tribute to the star was her frequent collaborator and one-time partner, Woody Allen, who said of Keaton:
“It’s grammatically incorrect to say “most unique,” but all rules of grammar, and I guess anything else, are suspended when talking about Diane Keaton. Unlike anyone the planet has experienced or is unlikely to ever see again, her face and laugh illuminated any space she entered.”
It has been clear from the outpouring of love for Diane Keaton that the actress’ body of work touched the lives of many people, both those she worked with and those who watched her movies. As another Hollywood legend to have passed recently, there are many fans who are reminding themselves of exactly how great an actress she really was.
