While Disney’s Tron is considered a cult classic, it was not a massive box office success back in 1982. Its legacy sequel, appropriately called Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010 and delivered the same mixed reviews, moderate box office, and an instant “cult classic” status. Now, the question whether lightning will strike a third time seems to have been answered early, as Tron: Ares landed star Jared Leto an opening day box office even lower than his Marvel bomb, Morbius.
Tron: Ares is directed by Joachim Rønning and follows the same timeline as the rest of the franchise, being set 15 years after the events of Tron: Legacy. The movie has plenty of familiar faces, with Leto’s lead being joined by Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges, but its reviews have been just as mixed as its predecessors as far as critics are concerned. The story of the third movie goes something like this:
“TRON: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”
Opening on Friday, Tron: Ares struggled to a $14.3 million opening day box office, which is lower than the highly criticized Morbius, and has resulted in the movie’s box office projection for the weekend being downgraded to $30 million from $45 million. Even if the movie had still been on target to hit the higher number, it would still be hugely disappointing for a film with a $180 million budget.
