Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, the actors known for their portrayal of Ted “Theodore” Logan and William “Bill” S. Preston Esq. in the time travel franchise Bill & Ted, have addressed the possibility of reprising the iconic characters in a possible future sequel. The third film in the series took decades to arrive, but the result was a film that proved there’s still some juice in the sci-fi comedy universe. Now, we could be getting Bill & Ted 4 at some point.
The duo spoke to Variety during the Business of Broadway Breakfast event. Reeves and Winter are currently starring together in the stage production Waiting for Godot, marking their latest reunion after Bill & Ted Face the Music. During the interview, they were asked if there was a possibility of returning to the time travel franchise after their Broadway engagement concludes in 2026, and the answer is exactly what fans were hoping to hear.
“[Director] Jamie [Lloyd] remarked that our friendship, our history together, really suits the play because of the friendship and connection that two characters have,” Winter said about their participation in the play. When asked about a possible return of Bill & Ted in a fourth entry of the time travel franchise, Reeves quickly replied, “Yes and yes.”
It appears there will be a fourth Bill & Ted, and Winter’s script may finally come to life. The last update we got was in 2024, when the actor said: “We’re tinkering with a fourth movie idea that all of us like, and the guys are going to write, so we’ll see. It takes us time to get these things going, and we never want to do them unless they’re great.”
Do Bill and Ted Still Have a Place in Modern Cinema?
Bill and Ted made their breakthrough in 1989 with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, a sci-fi comedy that saw two teen metalheads traveling through time to meet the historical figures they should be experts on for a high school assignment. In 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, the duo teamed up again not only to travel through time, but across dimensions. After being killed by the robot versions of themselves, Bill and Ted made a pact with the Grim Reaper himself, whom they befriended for a final showdown to prevent the world from being taken over by some evil dudes.
The legacy of the Bill & Ted franchise stayed alive for decades. A couple of TV shows added to the films’ cult following, and after a 30-year hiatus, the duo finally returned in Bill & Ted Face the Music. The nostalgia-driven sequel saw Reeves and Winter reprise their iconic roles, but it also focused on passing the torch to the next generation. It was the heartwarming reunion that fans had been waiting for.
The film was released in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its theatrical run was short, and most of the film’s earnings came from VOD. It was very popular during its home release, which might encourage studio execs to opt for a direct-to-streaming release in the case of a fourth movie. There’s no doubt that the fanbase is strong, and that Bill & Ted still have some appeal. However, Reeves and Winter still face the challenge of resonating with modern audiences. Let’s hope they get a chance.
