After over a decade, a film in the Tron series is coming out, and that is Tron: Ares. The film will hit the screens this Friday, and ahead of that, social media is already flooded with early views. It is a standalone sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy and features an ensemble cast that includes Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Gillian Anderson. Jeff Bridges will reprise his role as Kevin Flynn.

According to reports, Tron: Ares follows Ares, an advanced program sent from the digital realm into the physical world on a perilous mission. This marks humanity’s first contact with artificial intelligence beings.

The film premiered in Los Angeles on October 6, and soon after, critics began flooding the social media platform X [formerly Twitter] with their views.
Producer and filmmaker Dave Lee writes, “In keeping with its predecessors, TRON: Ares is spectacle upon spectacle. Narratively fun, but doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking — instead recycling old plot threads adnauseum. However, it works as an enjoyable franchise reset.”

Digital creator Ashley Carter says, “Tron: Ares is a visual spectacle with amazing action and a pulse-pounding Nine Inch Nails score that drives every scene. But the story is just OK and relies too much on hitting nostalgic beats. Characters are pretty flat, but Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith are standouts.”

Another critic, Meg, wrote, “TRON: ARES is an audio and visual feast. It’s unfortunate that the rest of the film is just okay. A clunky and uneven script leads to awkward humor and repetitive plot points. Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith are standouts. Solid grid action but doesn’t hit the highs of its predecessors.”

Filmmaker Yoko Higuchi said, “Jeff Cronenweth’s cinematography in Joachim Rønning’s Tron: Ares is absolutely gorgeous, really digging the neon red color scheme. Writer Josh Parham wrote, “TRON: ARES is a heap of vapid and inept storytelling decisions, taking all of the worst tendencies of its predecessor and doubling down. The effects are pretty, but all in service of a stale narrative with underwhelming set pieces. Not even the score can save this dumb exercise.”
Discussing Film’s Nicolas Delgadillo notes, “Tron: Ares is a worthy addition to The Grid, delivering on badass action and dazzling effects alongside a solid new story. Greta Lee steals the show while Joachim Rønning’s kinetic direction launches the series towards an exciting future.”
