Jonathan Majors still is holding out hope to reprise his role as Kang the Conqueror, but is this an actual possibility or wishful thinking on the actor’s part? Majors seemed to be Hollywood’s next big star and was set to be the central villain of Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ambitious multiverse plans, having been set up in Loki Season 1 before receiving a proper role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which set up Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Yet in March 2023, everything came undone for the actor after he was arrested on domestic assault charges, which he was found guilty of in December of that year. Marvel Studios quickly took action to cut all ties with Majors, and subsequently flipped the Multiverse Saga to focus on Doctor Doom instead.
Despite being fired by Marvel Studios, Majors still seems to hold onto the idea that he can possibly one day return as Kang the Conqueror. Speaking with The Sun U.S., Majors was asked about rumors that had circulated about the actor possibly returning as Kang the Conqueror in the MCU. Majors, who is not signed on to any Marvel Cinematic Universe projects at the time, said:
“I cannot say anything about that. Well, it’s a Multiverse, so there’s always that. Always a lot of opportunity for that.”
Jonathan Majors Wants to Return, But the MCU Doesn’t Want Him
Jonathan Majors has spent the past two years teasing a potential return to the MCU as Kang the Conqueror, saying he would be open to returning. Yet it isn’t the actor’s decision but that of Marvel Studios, and they don’t seem to want him back. Marvel Studios has already pivoted away from Kang the Conqueror to Doctor Doom, with Robert Downey Jr. playing the role, and renaming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty as Avengers: Doomsday.
Majors was not only let go from Marvel Studios due to allegations of domestic assault, but it appears the studio was also looking to pivot away from Kang to Doctor Doom following the poor reaction to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Kang the Conqueror was a villain that just did not work out the way the MCU needed and didn’t connect with viewers the way Loki or Thanos had in the past. Despite all the surrounding hype, Marvel Studios couldn’t make Kang into a villain that mainstream viewers seemed to care about, hence why they didn’t even bother recasting the role. So any return of Kang the Conqueror seems unlikely, with or without Majors.
There is also the fact that if Marvel Studios were to bring back Jonathan Majors, it would likely generate a great deal of controversy. When the Marvel Cinematic Universe still has plenty of stars that are awaiting return whose fate remains unclear, from Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk or Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror is likely far from anyone’s priority.
