Netflix subscribers hailed Scott Pilgrim Takes Off as the “best animated series” ever released on the platform. There was also a huge outcry when the series was revealed to not be getting a further expansion, and would just be a one-and-done series. While there is every possibility the acclaimed anime reimagining of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels could also end up being one of those shows that slides out of reach and is purged from streaming entirely, fans will be thrilled to know that they will be able to own a physical Blu-ray copy of the series from December.
While this may not be as good as getting another season of the show, fans will no doubt take the consolation prize of knowing they can own a copy of the show and no one will be able to rug-pull it from under them at a moment’s notice. Creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski announced the disc for early December, noting that it will include commentary tracks, while multiple outlets peg the release date as December 2, 2025.
The release is most notable for being one of the few Netflix shows – and indeed streaming shows in general, that are given the option of a home video release. The set will include all eight episodes of the series, along with creator commentary and other extras. It is highly likely that if Scott Pilgrim Takes Off had been returning for another season, Netflix might not have been quite as willing to send the first season out into the world in this way.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off reunited the cast of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs the World, which was released back in 2010, and while there have been several discussions about a possible sequel to the movie, one never materialized. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off became the surprise addition to the franchise no one was expecting, and more over, it brought back Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, and more to voice their former characters in what played out as both a reworking and sequel to the original movie.
‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ Was a Huge Critical Hit
While there was every chance that more than a decade after the original movie, interest in a new Scott Pilgrim project could have waned and the series could have fallen flat with those who had been hoping for a new movie.
Instead, the series scored a near-perfect 96% from critics, with some calling it “an absolute blast from start to finish,” while others said it was “exhilarating,” “revitalising,” and “a thrill for those missing the franchise.”
Even though the series landed a lower 85% from audiences, that didn’t stop many demanding more when it was announced that the show would not be getting a second season. However, creator O’Malley cleared up the belief that Netflix had “canceled” the series, and noted in an Instagram post that the show was always meant to be a one-and-done series. He said at the time:
“Some days you have to go online and say something to the public knowing full well you’ll see a bunch of clickbait headlines about it the next day. Yes, the one season show was “canceled” and is not getting the second season we did not ask for. SPTO was a one and done, but Scott Pilgrim will return…someday…just don’t ask me how.”
