Saturday Night Live kicks off its 51st season with Bad Bunny as guest host and Doja Cat as musical guest. Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub embarks on a culinary travelogue where bread is the common denominator. A new adaptation of the Parisian mystery series Maigret anchors a PBS Sunday lineup including the heist drama The Gold. The stars come out to celebrate Cyndi Lauper in a concert special from the Hollywood Bowl.

    Saturday Night Live

SATURDAY: Where have you been, SNL, with so much lately to satirize? The venerable late-night comedy show launches its historic 51st season with future Super Bowl halftime entertainer Bad Bunny taking his second turn as guest host, and Doja Cat making her first appearance as musical guest. (Surely Bad Bunny will exercise his musical chops as well.) It’s a rebuilding season, with the departure of veteran ensemble members Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, and Emil Wakim and the arrival of new featured players, including Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Kam Patterson, Veronika Slowikowska, and one familiar face: staff writer Ben Marshall from the “Please Don’t Destroy” troupe. There are often surprise appearances in the season opener — and given that a certain superstar is appearing on several NBC late-night shows this coming week, expectations are running high.

    Tony Shalhoub Breaking Bread

SUNDAY: Five-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub, who memorably played a gifted chef in the 1996 film Big Night, shares his enthusiasm for food — specifically, the baking and savoring of bread — in a culinary travelogue that finds common cultural ground in this most essential of staples. The journey begins in his longtime home of New York City, where he finds hidden gems in Chinatown and samples Irish soda bread. Future stops include Tokyo, São Paulo, Brazil, Marseille in France, and his hometown of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

'Maigret' Season 1 Episode 2 on PBS

    PBS Masterpiece

    Maigret

SUNDAY: The Parisian detective, made famous in Georges Simenon’s many novels and stories from 1931 to 1972, has been portrayed many times on small and large screens, but he’s never been as scruffy or as smoldering as in the contemporary adaptation making its Masterpiece debut. Benjamin Wainwright takes on the iconic role of the brooding and newly promoted Chief Inspector, who puts his career in jeopardy by clashing with his prosecutor boss Kernavel (Nathalie Armin) when he refuses her command to drop his investigation into a burglar’s violent murder and focus instead on a string of high-profile robberies. What are the odds they’re connected? The conclusion airs next Sunday, followed by two more two-part mysteries. Masterpiece also presents the premiere of the 2023 British heist drama The Gold (10/9c), starring Downton Abbey‘s Hugh Bonneville and Slow Horses‘ Jack Lowden, which previously aired on Paramount+.

    Task

SUNDAY: A pivotal episode of the grim crime drama finally brings task-force leader Tom (Mark Ruffalo), appropriately described as “the world’s most depressing human,” in close contact with his prime target, the hapless and increasingly isolated Robbie (Tom Pelphrey). Theirs is a memorable meeting of sorrowful minds, played out against a backdrop of shocking betrayals and inevitable tragedy.
